Description

A timeless, unique jar....a wonderfully distinctive vessel you will want to display in your home.
A great addition to your raku pottery collection.

This piece of art pottery is 9-¼ inches tall and about 5-¼ inches in diameter.

Steve threw this jar on the wheel. The lid was thrown then hand formed elements were added.

After bisque firing, the body of the jar was glazed with a serene turquoise green crackle glaze. Steve makes this glaze. The foot and an area on the lid and were left unglazed.

The jar is then placed in a specially built raku kiln and heated until the glaze has melted, about 1800 degrees. Still glowing with intense heat , it is removed from the kiln. This thermal shock causes the glaze to crackle.

Next the jar is placed into a container of sawdust. The sawdust ignites and produces a smoky atmosphere where carbon is absorbed into the unglazed clay and the crackled glaze.

Each piece has its own distinct crackle pattern and is unique in the way the carbon darkens the clay. There will never be another jar exactly like this one.

*Raku work is not designed to hold water or food. Some of our customers do use these jars as urns. This jar will hold 6 cups.
