Description

The arts and crafts movement began in Europe and North America in the 1880's and swept across Japan in the 1920's ..

"The Arts and Crafts movement was an international movement in the decorative and fine arts that began in Britain and flourished in Europe and North America between 1880 and 1910,[1] emerging in Japan in the 1920s. It stood for traditional craftsmanship using simple forms, and often used medieval, romantic, or folk styles of decoration. It advocated economic and social reform and was essentially anti-industrial..."(wikipedia)
Famous participants in the arts and crafts movement included William Morris, John Ruskin, Gustave Stickley and Frank Lloyd Wright.

The trademark is simply the word Japan, so it is from the early 20's.

This is a beautiful example of the arts and crafts movement:: the quality and the simplicity and the sturdiness. The positioning of the cup on the plate with room for food, giving it a utilitarian design as well, is also a very strong part of the movement. The arts and crafts period focused on living in harmony with nature, and this cup is a testament to that.

It is a brown base, with a white and green glaze, depicting bullrushes, all hand done. It is in excellent condition.
It is a very solid and sturdy set, made of a heavy porcelain.

Measurements: in inches: cup width: 3.5
cup height: 2.25
saucer: 7 inches

These sets are very collectible and hard to come by.

What goes around, comes around.
Love of beauty and quality from the past is happiness.
