Description

An original ornate antique document dated 1889 for the Business of Retail Liquor Dealer, issued by the US Internal Revenue..."Severe Penalties are imposed for neglect or refusal to place and keep this stamp conspicuously in your establishment or place of business"! This was issued to Albert Harting, of Cedarburg, WI,by Revenue Collector, ? Fink, of Sheboygan, WI, on July 5, 1889.

If you distilled or sold liquor you had to have this document in your bar, distillery or wagon, otherwise, you would be fined, faced possible jail time and shut down by Revenuer, Fink.

This document has beautiful graphics! Engraved on the top center is the Greek God, Mercury, with the medical symbol (snake & staff) in hand, leaning on a large woven wicker, glass bottle, sitting next to wooden kegs, a moonshine still, along with a funnel lying on the ground! On the lower left corner is a cornucopia over flowing with fruits, vegetables and flowers! There is a snake on the right side corner with some acorns.

The government used this as a tax for selling, dispensing and distilling liquor to raise money to pay for the Civil War.

In fine print on the bottom is: "Bureau Engraving & Printing", "$25 Dollars Per Year" near the bottom, and "Stamp For Special Tax", near the top. When held to the light, the watermark, "USIR", United States Revenue Service, is visible.

The document measures 10" by 7", has age toning (not pure white), three folds, a split on the top border, light edge wear and a couple of small spots, otherwise, condition is very good..a beautiful document...great Wisconsin moonshine/distilling history!

This is a FANTASTIC piece of history and would be great to display in a wine cellar, pharmacy, bar, distillery, museum or office! I am happy to answer any questions, please feel free to email and thank you for your interest!

All items ship within 24 hours and I will contact you when I receive notification of any purchase, thank you! :)

As always, many thanks to my regular customers for your continued patronage! :)
