Dimensions

Pendant height: 1.68 Inches; Pendant width: 0.50 Inches

This pendant combines two gemstones: a faceted aquamarine and a cabochon of Lucin variscite. The aquamarine measures 7.5 x 6.0 mm and weighs in at 1.05 carats. The variscite measures 15.0 x 10.2 mm and weighs in at 4.8 carats.

The top stone is an oval-cut, light blue aquamarine. Aquamarine is a gem in the beryl family, cousin to rich green Emerald, golden-yellow Heliodor and pink Morganite. It ranges in color from a rich sea-green through pure blues to a very light, delicate blue. This stone is on the light end, with a bright cut and a pale sky-blue color.

Variscite is a gem which has been steadily growing in popularity along with its close cousin, turquoise. Both stones are closely related members of the phosphate family of minerals, and they sometimes even occur in the same mines, or even mixed in the same stone. The biggest difference is that turquoise tends to be blue to blue-green, whereas variscite is almost always green or rarely bluish-green. Though variscite has long been in turquoise's shadow, it has gained an identity of its own, with its beautiful range of green tones. This stone comes from the Lucin mine in Arizona. It has veins of rich green running through a white base. I cut this stone myself.
