Faceted Labradorite and Raw Opal Pendant (3.80 tctw) Sterling Silver Crystal Opal Rough Jewelry, Womens Opal Necklace, Rainbow Moonstone Gem

This pendant features two gemstones: a faceted labradorite and a raw Ethiopian opal. The labradorite measures 7.18 mm in diameter and weighs in at 1.3 carats. The opal measures 0.70 x 0.39 inches (17.9 x 9.9 mm) and weighs in at 2.5 carats.

The top stone is a faceted gem labradorite. Labradorite is a gem with character: each and every stone is unique. Its fiery sheen is formed when microscopically thin layers form in plagioclase feldspar, which diffract light into a variety of colors. This stone shows a beautiful stripe of golden glow surrounded by blue which runs right down the center of the gem. This is a rare example of a labradorite with a base so clear that it could be faceted instead of cut as a cabochon. This makes for a rich liveliness rarely seen in this gem. While labradorites of this type are sometimes referred to as "moonstone", that's a bit of a misnomer.

Below it is an Ethiopian opal. Ethiopian hydrophane opal is really exciting material. Since its discovery in 2008, it has provided very stable and beautiful stones with such rich and varied color as to rival the best of Australia. Before that find, opal was a frustrating stone for me (and, I suspect, most average buyers)--for all its reputation, the only stones available at reasonable prices were milky and almost colorless. The find in Ethiopia really blew things open, allowing inexpensive but fantastically beautiful material to become available, at least for now. This stone is an interesting example, showing vertical bands of different kinds of fire. This beautifully complements the banded fire of the labradorite set above it.
