Description

OUR LADY, Refuge of Sinners - 19th Century Mexican Retablo N.S. De Refugio de Los Pecadores

This warm and cheerful 19th century retablo represents "NS de Refugio de los Pecadores," or "Our Lady, Refuge of Sinners."

NS de Refugio is perhaps the most popular of all subjects in retablo art. She is almost always depicted as she is here, surrounded by a colorful garland of flowers, with puffy white clouds, the Christ Child and her ciphers initialed on the side of her cloak.

Dimensions: retablo measures
7 inches x 5 inches.

Condition: “Oxidation and small points of paint loss throughout, especially in all four corners and around edges. Bending throughout, but more so around edges and corners. Small hole in top center. Overall in good condition.”

A bit of background information and some further explanation on this iconography, in 1719 a Jesuit missionary brought a copy of a painting originally created for an altar formerly at Frascati, Italy, in the style of Guido or Salvator Rosa, to Mexico, the city of Zacatecas to be precise. The painting inspired the locals to adopt N.S., Refugio de Pecadores as their patron. The Virgin wears a golden crown and supports a crowned Christ Child. She dons a cloak that is drawn across her right shoulder, and her dark blue cape is initialed with her ciphers. The Christ child rests his right hand on her right arm and grips her right thumb with his left hand..

A retablo in Latin American folk art (also lámina) is a devotional painting, especially a small popular or folk art one using iconography derived from traditional Catholic church art.
