Description

CUSTOM Red Iron Feather Medicine Bag... The Red-tailed Hawk has a thrilling, raspy scream that sounds exactly like a raptor should sound. At least, that’s what Hollywood directors seem to think. Whenever a hawk or eagle appears onscreen, the shrill cry on the soundtrack is almost always a Red-tailed Hawk. New Mexico skies are filled with this predator and made New Mexico its home.

This bird is the Native American symbol for the eastern gate of life, where the sun comes up and sheds its light on the back of Mother Earth. In Lakota Sioux mythology, Cetan is the name of a hawk spirit associated with the east and the qualities of speed, dedication and good vision. Hawks are seen as day birds... unlike an owl, which is a night bird. These two are kept in separate spaces from one another because of this distinction.

A hawk is considered a war bird and warriors wore these to give them instincts of the hawk in war and to signify rank. There are a few women warriors and women medicine people who can wear the feathers from the birds of prey. Usually though, women do not wear feathers in their hair, as this denotes some level of warrior which most women have not attained. When given a bird of prey feather she can use it for saging. This is done now-a-days, but it was not done by former Native American ancestors. If the woman is instructed as to how to wear the feather on the ear then that would be an honorable way she could wear it.

Let the wind cut along your face as it does the Red Iron Hawk Medicine Bag as it streaks through New Mexico skies...

This bag is 3 1/2 by 5 inches embellished with terra cotta colored and dark brown colored glass beads, wood and glass pony beads with a 26 inch braided leather lanyard...

FAQs

The section called Gallery CUSTOM from Sold is to help customers wanting a custom-made bag to find similar bag ideas. Select one of these and I will make a CUSTOM bag for you similar to it or of the same subject matter. The bag color is of my choice but I will try to accommodate a special request. These bags cannot be duplicated, obviously, being one-of-a-kind creations. Once a custom-made order is placed there are no exchanges, new selection or return.
Earthwayspirits medicine bags are hand crafted and hand painted, one of a kind. The craftmeanship of the leather pouch is substantial. The beading is secured with polyester threat to prevent breaking. The painting, however, will not withstand misuse of any kind; stretching, scraping or exposing it to any liquids. I use a fabric paint sealant to make the paint and ink more adherant. Under normal wear and tear, earthwayspirits medicine bags should last years. Store in a dry, dark and cool place...
Allow me 8 days to create your medicine bag and then add shipping time. Please inquire through Etsy messaging if you would like to request a specific color leather or beading be used, only if available.
