This is a Mocha Letter Brief manufactured by Coach in New York City in very good condition. The creed states: "Made in New York City, U.S.A and contains registration number: 594-8933 . This is a rare opportunity to acquire a very unique vintage bag.

A Coach Letter Brief is a scarce commodity on the vintage market. NYC Creed Bags are quickly disappearing. So if you are looking for a Coach Letter Brief Bag with a NYC Creed it's naturally going to be a difficult search because, by its very nature, such a bag is rare.

If you've browsed some of my other Coach listings you know I don't have Coach catalogs preceding 1981 which is when most NYC Bags were listed. So the first mention of a Coach Letter Brief in my catalogs is found in my 1990 Coach Holiday Catalog. The bag described in the listing below is not the same as this bag in certain respects. The Letter Brief sold in 1990 had a brass turn lock closure but this bag has a brass buckle closure. This Letter Brief is 10 3/4 inches high and 3 inches wide. While this bag is large enough to accommodate letter size files, 13 3/4 inches long, the 1990 bag is a full inch longer. In addition, the bag in the 1990 catalog was not available in the scarlet red leather.

The 1990 listing for the Letter Brief states:

"A. New letter brief

No. 5270 $246 ($246 in 1990 is equivalent to $458 in 2015)

Full-length outside back pocket. Two front pockets under leather - lined flap. Inside zipper pocket. Brass turn lock closure. Contoured leather handle. 43 inch adjustable shoulder strap detaches, brass buckles tuck inside. 14 and three quarter inches by 10 and three quarter inches by 3 inches. Black, British tan, Mahogany, Navy, Tabac." (See Coach Catalog listing in photo 5 above- Collage )

Condition:

This bag is in very good condition. It is structurally sound. It does not have any rips, tears or holes. However, one corner looks like it's starting to separate. [ See Photo 5 Collage upper right hand ] This has not ripped and does not affect the structure. Additionally, like most vintage bags over 35 years old it has some scuffs and scratches on different parts of the bag. Please view the photos. I have more photos as well and will be more than happy to provide them on request. I have not attempted any rehab on this bag. Normally I would use a product known as Leather CPR on a bag with scuffs like this which would minimize the appearance of scuffing and scratching. However, since this is a bag collectors may be interested in and they may prefer a different treatment I have not used any conditioner.

Significance of NYC Coach Creed

NYC Coach bags are beginning to disappear at an alarming rate. This Coach leather bag is one of the most sought after Coach products by collectors because it is a "New York City Bag". These are some of the highest quality Coach products. "New York City" bags were made in the original Coach factory in New York City that operated from the late 1960's through the mid 1980's. Some, but not all, of the Coach bags produced during this era were designed by the well known American designer Bonnie Cashin. Consequently, when you buy a New York City Coach bag you are buying more than an accessory, you are making a potential investment.

Please review the photos carefully because they are part of this piece’s description and condition. Please feel free to ask questions or ask for more photos. Etsy limits the number of photos we can post with listing so we have more available.
