In 1973, Rufus was a local Chicago band fronted by keyboardist and lead vocalist Ron Stockert. At that point, Chaka Khan was a newly added band member who sang a limited number of Rufus' songs. Their debut album produced lackluster sales; it was their second release, "Rags to Rufus" when their fortunes changed. On that album, the two chart-topping tracks ("Tell Me Something Good" written by Steve Wonder, and "You Got the Love" written by Chaka Khan and Ray Parker, Jr.) feaured Chaka Khan as the lead vocalist. The album was an immediate success. With robust sales and Chaka Khan's charismatic stage presence, the record company suggested that the band needed to re-focus by putting Khan front and center. Three original members, including Stockert (who joined Three Dog Night), left the band. This, their third album, features a re-vamped line-up and a new name: Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan. This album replicated the success of their previous release -- propelled by the high-energy "Once You Get Started".

After hearing "Once You Get Started" on the radio, I immediately bought the album. That song, and several others on the album, are among my favorite funk and R&B songs ever. The record is in Excellent condition, with very few audio "blemishes". The cover and sleeve are also excellent.

"Rufusized" was the first album that fully showcased Chaka Khan's talent. There are few R&B vocalists who can compare with her range and infectious energy -- which have made her something of a cult figure (she even has her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame). Here's a chance to hear the Queen of Funk on the original vinyl.
