Description

This is a vintage Gokey Messenger Bag made of waxhide glove tanned leather trim and thick cotton canvas. Gokey Company was founded in 1850 and acquired by Orvis in 1990. Many compare the Gokey line of leather trimmed canvas bags to Ghurka bags. Some claim they are better. [ See more under about Gokey]

This bag is designed to carry your books, files, and electronic devices in one efficient package. The overall size is 15" x 12" x 4". On the front of the bag there is a gusseted pocket 12 x 8 x 1.5 which is secured by a flap with a snap closure. On the rear of the bag there is a full length zipper pocket 15" x 6". The inside is secured with an industrial brass zipper. The Inside is lined with brown ballistic nylon lining where you will find a full sized ( 15 x 12) zipper pocket and two slip pouches 4.5' x 7.5' which will easily accommodate your smart phone, keys and wallet. The bag has dual rolled leather rabbit eared handles with a 10 inch drop.

Dimensions:

Length: 15 inches
Height: 12 inches
Width: 4 inches

Handle drop: 10 inches

Condition:

This bag is in very good condition. It has no rips, tears, or holes. All hardware operates properly and it is structurally sound. It has very few scuffs and scratches and it is very clean inside and out. I would rate excellent used or mint but for two minor flaws. One flaw is a detached key strap and fob. The strap is detached and currently stored inside the bag. That strap is normally attached with a brass post that runs through the side of the bag into a leather flap on the end of the zipper frame but all that is there is the hole for the post. [ see photos in collage] The other flaw is a small spot on the back of the bag where the canvas is slightly lighter which is an indication to me that the prior owner had a spot removed. [ See photo 4 with zoom and you will see slightly lighter canvas in one small area] Aside from these minor issues the bag is in excellent condition.

It is our opinion this was a bag manufactured by Gorkey before it was acquired by Orvis in 1990. We base that opinion on the fact that the bag style and construction is similar to the bags manufactured by Gokey and other manufacturers during that time frame. In addition the logo on this bag only references Gokey. While Orvis continued to manufacture a line of Gokey bags after acquiring Gokey in 1990 our research indicates that those bags produced by Orvis as Gokey bags after 1990 also have the Orvis logo and name on the bag.

About Gokey

Gokey Company was founded in 1850. It has a stellar reputation for long lasting bags and shoes. I found articles in the St. Paul Pioneer News stating that Gokey was acquired by Orvis in 1990 and that Orvis closed the Gokey St. Paul, Minnesota plant in 1992. However, Orvis continued manufacturing Gokey at a separate plant and continues to do so today. This is what Orvis has to say about its Gokey manufacturing plant on its website:

"Tipton, Missouri is home to Gokey Manufacturing, where Orvis sources its line of Gokey canvas and leather luggage. And while canvas is known first and foremost for its rugged utility, pair it with refined leather and it transforms into something decidedly more elegant,,, Gokey pieces thick, eighteen-ounce navy cotton canvas with beautiful waxhide trim to create a tasteful line of bags you’ll be pleased and proud to carry with you to the office, the farmers’ market, or on your next vacation."

I also found a review from someone who owned 3 pieces of Gokey luggage that says a lot about the quality of this bag from SEAVIB / REDMOND, WA: "I have three that are 32 years old. They are the best luggage I have ever owned. Gokeys does leather/canvas better than Ghurka and Louis Vuitton"

Please visit our shop and check out the other professional gear and briefcases available. We have plenty of Coach products, including some rare NYC Coach bags from the 1970's. We also have briefcases, attache's and messenger bags manufactured by Hartmann, Ghurka, Fossil, Cole Hahn, Goldpfeil, and other well known manufacturers.

IT'S THE REAL THING PLEDGE. If we sell it, it's the real thing. We guarantee it's the real thing or you get your money back including your delivery costs we this pledge:

GUARANTEED AUTHENTIC OR ALL MONEY BACK. We understand there are counterfeits and knockoffs of vintage products by well known manufacturers for sale all over the internet and in other market places. We use multiple procedures to assure the products we sell are authentic. One procedure we use is to research authenticity through vintage manufacturer catalogs and to report our research in the listing. Sometimes we include a snippet from the catalog to corroborate our research and educate you about the history of the bag. The purpose of reporting what the manufacturer says about its product in the catalog is to verify our research on the authenticity and to educate you about how a vintage product was portrayed in the past. It is not intended to hold our shop out as a representative of the manufacturer. However, if it turns out we are wrong or our research is not correct we guarantee that if we sell you a product represented to be manufactured by a reputable company like Coach, Cole Haan, Ghurka, Filson, Christian Dior, Hartmann, Gucci, or any other company and you have competent evidence that the product is not authentic we will refund your purchase price and delivery cost. In addition, we will pay for return postage.
