Description

NOTE: This book has been sold but I keep it up so someone interested can find it (like you!) so that I can know to look for it specifically for them. Of course it won't be the same book but I am good at and love the hunt for books, and can likely find you another copy of that same edition or another beautiful edition of the same book. :) Don't ever hesitate to contact me on sold listings, that's why they are here!

There is no other book like this one.

Known as Agatha Christie's best-selling novel, Ten Little Indians — well, actually I should stop right there because that should give you all you really need to know about this book. Agatha Christie is a legend, so her best-selling novel is by default, legendary. While a hardcover edition would be preferable to some, I like this edition more, as Christie's works were coming out at a time when paperbacks like these, pulps, were in vogue. This format then dates it to that time period and style, which gives it that historical sense you don’t get with newer books, for instance. Also knowing this is the original cover used for the novel — that it is the first edition under this title (it’s a long story but the original title used the N-word, when the work was published as a serial and not as a full work, and I won’t use the term here—still you should know the term features in a song that is a major plot point in the novel, as is race in general), before any (other) changes were made and it then came out subsequently under ANOTHER title (And Then There Were None), and just its unique construction and origination are striking enough for me to favor it. It makes this copy especially interesting to own, if it is possible to be more interesting than just what the work itself is.

And Christie — boy is she incredibly interesting herself, known as the “world’s best-selling author of all time" (no really, Google it!), which might actually be true, and you've likely heard her name if you've not heard her story. Does the number 92 mean anything to you? That’s how many books she wrote in her lifetime. Prolific doesn’t begin to describe it — the woman exuded books! The basics are that she is still today mystery's best known writer, possibly the world's most recognized author second only to J K Rowling, and her works have appeared in hundreds of different adaptations — BBC made waves in August of this year when it greenlighted SEVEN DIFFERENT ADAPTATIONS of Christie’s works, for instance, and that’s TODAY, after YEARS AND YEARS of adaptations. It boggles the mind. Christie basically runs the mystery genre herself, even after her death, aside from Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic detective Sherlock Holmes.

Her writings have also inspired hundreds more works, including those of Janet Evanovich, P. D. James, and other mystery bigwigs like Louise Penny and Michael Connelly, to name only a few of the many, many modern examples. Even Stephen King, somewhat in and outside of the genre of course, has credited Christie as an inspiration of his, and the two have own many of the same awards over their long careers.

Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot are the characters that shone and shine most out of all of Christie’s works, the ones that cut out and above the rest, and so it is surprising Ten Little Indians does not star the elderly, yet intelligent and compelling, lovable Miss Marple or the prideful, meticulous and somewhat ridiculous Hercule Poirot. Instead it reads almost as a horror piece, which may be why it stands out so much from her other works. Certainly you could talk about the plot and meanings and hints and characters for days on end. There are ten separate characters all lured to an island under false pretenses, all people who have murdered other people. They are there to pay for their crimes in a fashion, and slowly but surely all ten are killed as retribution. The story is written as a confession by the organizer of this fantastical and horrifying stranded-island-meets-whodunnit-meets-what-the-heck-is-going-on.

In what has been “officially” calculated as the seventh-best-selling title in the world, (IN THE WORLD, think about that), Agatha Christie solidifies her talent and spot in literary history, and whether you read it as Ten Little Indians (as you should) or the edited And Then There Were None, you should buy it, read it, and treasure it. This copy is waiting for you.

And here's the straight information you may be looking for:

-Full title: Ten Little Indians
-Author: Agatha Christie
-Format: Paperback, color cover, First Pocket Books Printing, first time using new title "Ten Little Indians" instead of "And Then There Were None"
-Condition: Near mint. Has small ink print/stamp from bookstore "Tattered Pages Bookshop," as well as the letters (small) "DO" on the first page. Other than that no writing, marks or rips.
-Publisher: Pocket Books, a division of Simon & Schuster
-Copyright: 1967 Agatha Christie Mallowan
-Date published: 1977
-Provenance: As the inside states, this came from the Tattered Pages Bookshop in Monroe Connecticut, and I bought it from elsewhere in CT when I went through a HUGE Agatha Christie phase last year :) (so 2015 sometime)
-Pricing: I priced the book this way because Agatha Christie novels are hard to find in good shape, and this one certainly is -- additionally, this book seems to be mainly available out there with the previous title, though with similar paperback format and cover art, "And Then There Were None." So, the fact this edition's title is different makes it more valuable. Agatha Christie novels in paperback are highly collectible, which added to the determination as well. Just the fact she is the most popular author of all time, arguably, and that this is her most famous and popular work, arguably, were facts I couldn’t ignore :)

This book is BEAUTIFUL! I was so excited to receive it yesterday, so I could read it over Christmas. I read the abridged version of Thomas Wingfold, Curate over a decade ago and loved it, so I have been looking forward to this so much. Thank you!!!!!!!! :-D

FAQs

Absolutely! I'm willing to do anything to get this book to you, but I will not write on it. If it is not in the condition you want, I know preservation techniques and will certainly oblige as best I can. You just need to let me know.
I will wrap the book any way you want. It is special and so are you, you deserve it! I will also write cards, include photographs, anything you'd like that would make this transaction more, well, you.
I won't tell you how to care for your book, but as to how they are cared for now, they are housed in two places -- some are wrapped in plastic in my main room in the part of the house that used to be a quaint B&B, lined on lovely old wooden bookshelves; others are stacked in piles or leaning on cool, creative and different bookends all round the room, and all are given care, attention, and kept away from my dog :)

Others sit in my library, in built-in authentic 1800s wooden and glass-door library shelves that line the walls in a secluded room in a historic home on the shore. With vintage, warm lamplights over the tiny marble fireplace, the library's windows catch plenty of sunlight--the books are in good homes and will arrive undamaged.
If the book comes later than expected this does not mean it was sent late. Every book is sent within 1-3 business days, unless one of the days is a Sunday, then it could be an extra day. This applies to International orders as well, but they might take longer to get to you than in-country orders. If there is a problem, please bring it up with UPS or see Etsy's policies.
I am more than willing to hunt down a specific book for you. This can take time, however, and would be a matter of personal back-and-forth on the site so you would have to keep in contact. There is no guarantee. I'm good at finding things however, and if I cannot find it to sell to you myself I will direct you to where I can find it online, if I can.

Important to note, however, that I may have it in my holdings already so it ALWAYS helps to check in with me. Listings come up continually, and it may just be waiting here to get processed and put up.
Contact me directly via the site and I will do my absolute best to help correct it. There should be no problems.
Always willing to make new friends and take on new jobs or opportunities -- this business does not stop me from working a full or part time job, and I am currently looking, so please contact me! Dempseylynch@gmail.com. I am definitely interested in talking with you and love meeting new people (especially book lovers of course).
Sure! Although the books are priced the way they are and are worth that amount based on a lot of factors (condition compared to others available online, if there are any available online or if it is the only one, age and whether it is signed or special in some way, etc.) I am always willing to hear you out as to why you think the books price is off, and work with you as best I can. I cannot guarantee the price will change, that is bad for my business, but I will listen to you. Don't be afraid to reach out. The worst that can happen is I will say no.

I put the reasons behind my pricing method for each item at the end of the listing so check that out if you're curious too :)
