Description

NOTE: This book has been sold but I keep it up so someone interested can find it (like you!) so that I can know to look for it specifically for them. Of course it won't be the same book but I am good at and love the hunt for books, and can likely find you another copy of that same edition or another beautiful edition of the same book. :) Don't ever hesitate to contact me on sold listings, that's why they are here!

---

There is no other book like this one.

There really isn't -- I cannot find this copy anywhere with this decal on the cover. Every other first edition has a different decal, and as the book was entered into the library of congress in 1864 and this is listed as coming out in 1865, it can only either be a simultaneous first edition, with the listing entered as the years switched over, or a second edition that the internet is completely unaware of. I'll leave that decision up to you, as I can only wonder.

Enoch Arden is a tragic love story, but it is more than that -- the prose-poetry of it is enchanting despite its sad tale, and it strikes a human chord in the question, how do you move on when the love of your life is gone? Do you ever really move on? What if they came back? These are things even the best writers and non-writers alike have grappled with through the ages, and Tennyson adds his literary talent to this debacle in Enoch Arden, making it both a tale of redemption and loss at the same time, of love and sorrow, and masterfully written. In a slim volume, it is an achievement that might have passed by those who looked over it in the bookstore I found it in, thinking "oh it is only an old book," but those who know Tennyson know that whatever he writes is so much more than that, so worthy it is even all these years later.

And someone already knew this before I even put it up, so it is now reserved and will be sold to a Tennyson admirer, which is all that I could hope for. If you are looking at this listing, however, be assured I find books like this very often, books that have been discarded and are lying in wait for someone to find them and appreciate their beauty and specialness. I am that person, and I'm always on the hunt for these books, to rescue them and put them up here for you, so keep checking back at my site or message me about what I may not have put up here yet. :)

So say farewell to this book as I say farewell to it now, and hopefully in the future if you were looking for this you will find your own copy, and it will make your day as happy as mine was the day I found this, and as happy as I hope this buyer will be when they receive it. :)

And here are the straight details you may be looking for:

-Full title: Enoch Arden
-Author: Alfred Lord Tennyson, written here simply as "Alfred Tennyson."
-Format: Hardcover, gilt engraving on front and spine over green boards, gold on page-edges and black and white illustration throughout. First or second edition, unclear as no note whether copyright was held before print, in which case this would be the first edition.
-Condition: Fragile but wonderful!
-Publisher: J E Tilton and Company, Boston
-Copyright: J E Tilton & Co, 1864
-Date published: 1865
-Provenance: This I found in a bookstore that has an annual 30 percent off sale, and a section of rare books I'd been salivating over for months, so I went out and spent WAY too much money on these books, most of which I kept for myself, but this one was a passion project. I knew it would make someone so happy to find it, and I wanted a greater audience to know it existed outside of this bookstore, as it was squished between other books not-in-great-shape, and online there is no other copy with the cover image of this one, so I knew it was a special edition whether it was the true first edition (which I believe) or an alternative edition printed simultaneously with the ones seen online as "first edition" with different markings on the cover. The reason I call it a passion project is I had to reenforce the binding so that the front cover board did not detach itself from the spine, but that has been done and it is in better shape than ever. I am so proud of this book, of finding it and fixing it and selling it, that I almost don't mind the fact that I have no idea who owned this book before me, or where it came from. Usually not knowing the provenance of a book is bothersome to me, but this one is unsigned and the shopkeeper didn't remember who had sold it to them, it had been there such a long time. Like I said though, I almost don't mind that there is no signature in beautiful script from the previous owner so many years ago. I get excited when that happens, but still. This book is awesome, and maybe its new owner will sign it themselves, and who knows where it will end up afterwards?
-Pricing: I priced the book based on what I could find of the other copies that are listed as first editions out there, but I know this is either the first edition or a simultaneous edition, at the very latest a second edition within the same year, as the covers are different, so I had a hard time deciding between listing it for more than the other copies because of its uniqueness, or less. Eventually I put a picture of it up on my Instagram and someone made an offer that was around what I had been thinking of selling it for, so we made a deal that way, taking the pains of my decision off my shoulders :) Must be fate!

FAQs

Absolutely! I'm willing to do anything to get this book to you, but I will not write on it. If it is not in the condition you want, I know preservation techniques and will certainly oblige as best I can. You just need to let me know.
I will wrap the book any way you want. It is special and so are you, you deserve it! I will also write cards, include photographs, anything you'd like that would make this transaction more, well, you.
I won't tell you how to care for your book, but as to how they are cared for now, they are housed in two places -- some are wrapped in plastic in my main room in the part of the house that used to be a quaint B&B, lined on lovely old wooden bookshelves; others are stacked in piles or leaning on cool, creative and different bookends all round the room, and all are given care, attention, and kept away from my dog :)

Others sit in my library, in built-in authentic 1800s wooden and glass-door library shelves that line the walls in a secluded room in a historic home on the shore. With vintage, warm lamplights over the tiny marble fireplace, the library's windows catch plenty of sunlight--the books are in good homes and will arrive undamaged.
If the book comes later than expected this does not mean it was sent late. Every book is sent within 1-3 business days, unless one of the days is a Sunday, then it could be an extra day. This applies to International orders as well, but they might take longer to get to you than in-country orders. If there is a problem, please bring it up with UPS or see Etsy's policies.
I am more than willing to hunt down a specific book for you. This can take time, however, and would be a matter of personal back-and-forth on the site so you would have to keep in contact. There is no guarantee. I'm good at finding things however, and if I cannot find it to sell to you myself I will direct you to where I can find it online, if I can.

Important to note, however, that I may have it in my holdings already so it ALWAYS helps to check in with me. Listings come up continually, and it may just be waiting here to get processed and put up.
Contact me directly via the site and I will do my absolute best to help correct it. There should be no problems.
Always willing to make new friends and take on new jobs or opportunities -- this business does not stop me from working a full or part time job, and I am currently looking, so please contact me! Dempseylynch@gmail.com. I am definitely interested in talking with you and love meeting new people (especially book lovers of course).
Sure! Although the books are priced the way they are and are worth that amount based on a lot of factors (condition compared to others available online, if there are any available online or if it is the only one, age and whether it is signed or special in some way, etc.) I am always willing to hear you out as to why you think the books price is off, and work with you as best I can. I cannot guarantee the price will change, that is bad for my business, but I will listen to you. Don't be afraid to reach out. The worst that can happen is I will say no.

I put the reasons behind my pricing method for each item at the end of the listing so check that out if you're curious too :)
