Description

RARE:

This pendant was used to attach to the center front of the bodice at the neckline and worn by the Kandyan, Singhalese women of Sri Lanka. I have detailed the pendant being used in the last listing photo, c. 1800's.

The jewellery of Sri Lanka constitutes a distinctive subgroup within the context of Indian ornamentation.

This is an exquisite example of a - very small - pendant traditionally worn by Sinhales women from Kandy, the old capital city in Sri Lanka's central highlands, (formerly Ceylon). It is known as in the "Kandyan Tradition" style with the high relief repousse silver metalwork - almost three dimensional repousse.

The repousse is a metalworking technique in which a malleable metal is ornamented or shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in high relief.

The detail is exceptional for such a small pendant with the Sri Lankan silversmiths known for their exquisite jewellery making.

The pendant is very small - 3.5cm (1 3/8") in length, slightly convex with a separate backing plate and hollow and entirely covered with a floral motif surrounded by interlacings scrolling vines and a center stylized lotus or lily.

It is fringed with a row of finely attached by silver wire bead dangles.

The water lily was declared the national flower of Sri Lanka. The flower is considered a symbol of truth, purity and discipline.

It has a lovely soft silver patina that high silver content jewellery achieves after decades of wear. This pendant shows signs that it was originally gilded in the center section.

The pendant has a sturdy hook bale and floral unit added. The pendant has been strung on an 45cm (18") Indian sterling silver 2mm snake chain with an S clasp for closing. The end of the chain unscrews at the cap to allow the chain to slip through a small bale.

Width: 3.5 cm (1 3/8")
Height: including Dangles 3.5 cm (1 3/8")
Pendant Weight: 7.5 Grams (0.265 oz.)
Snake Chain Weight: 9.1 Grams (0.32 oz.)
Snake Chain Length: 45 cm (18")
Tested for High Grade Silver

Returns and exchange details
I want you to be satisfied with your purchase so if there are any problems please contact me through Etsy within 2 business days after receiving your item, so we can discuss a solution.

I only take back items if they are grossly misrepresented in the Etsy listing and not if the buyer changes their mind or if an item is not to their liking.

I endeavor to accurately describe all of the items in my Etsy shop, but in the rare event that I have made a mistake and the item received is not as described, I will refund the buyer's purchase price less the shipping charges, upon return of the item. The Buyer pays for the return postage.

This refund will be issued via the same payment method with which the items were bought and only once I have received the returned goods back.

Please note that the parcel and its contents are your responsibility until they are returned back to me safely. I therefore require that you return by Registered Post, retaining proof of postage.

If you have questions please ask before buying and I will respond back in a timely manner.
