Description

This is a Gladstone style leather briefcase without a manufacturers mark. It has a"Deloitte Haskins and Sells" Los Angeles monogram and the number 0187 is stamped on this bag. Deloitte Haskins and Sells [ now known as 'Deloitte' ] is the second largest accounting firm [Now referred to as a 'Professional Services Firm' ] in the world. Deloitte has roots in the UK through its founder (William Welch Deloitte) that goes back to 1845 and has changed names on more than one occasion. This bag was purchased by this firm sometime between 1952 and 1989. [ see age research below]

Back to this briefcase. It's made of brown leather and bright brass hardware, in decent condition, and would make a great trial case for a young lawyer. It's made of genuine leather and has brass hardware. This is a Gladstone style briefcase. In my line of work this is the kind of case you see the seasoned trial lawyers carry into a court room. If your an accountant, this is the kind of case you see seasoned accountants carry into an audit. If you are an educator, this is the kind of case you see a seasoned professor carry into the class room. If you are a doctor, this is the kind of case you see a seasoned physician carry into a seminar.

This bag has two padded leather handles. It has a leather strap that 'flaps over' the top of the case and affixes to the front secured by a brass twist clasp that fits through a multi slotted brass fixture. The multiple slots allow the bag to be adjusted for wider or narrower expansions based on the load it's carrying. The top is rigid and opens by way of a hinged side panel system used in the Gladstone style. When opened, the interior has one large compartment with two rigid divided sections to hold books, papers, laptops, IPads and whatever else you may need to carry around. There is also a leather envelope with a separate snap closure inside that allows the user to segregate important documents. The bag has reinforced corners and heavy duty top stitching around the edges. The bottom has brass feet.

Dimensions:

Length: 17.5 inches
Height: 12 inches
Width: 7.5 inches

Condition

This case is in good condition. It has no rips, tears or holes. It is as structurally sound as the day it was manufactured. However, like most vintage bags that have been put to good use it has character that shows in the scuffs, scratches and scars of its experience. I would say it is now more beautiful than the day it was created because of this. Please see photos for a more accurate description of the condition.

Based on our research it is our opinion this bag was manufactured sometime between 1952 and 1989. As noted above the "Deloitte" firm was founded in 1845. However, according to Wikepedia the firm changed names on numerous occasions and was known as Deloitte Haskins and Sells from 1952 to 1989 before it changed its name again. "In 1952, Deloitte's firm (by then known as Deloitte, Plender, Griffiths & Co.) merged with Haskins & Sells to form Deloitte Haskins & Sells.[footnote omitted] In 1989, Deloitte Haskins & Sells merged with Touche Ross in the USA to form Deloitte & Touche. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deloitte

The Gladstone Style

The first Gladstone bag was designed and manufactured by J G Beard at his leather shop in the City of Westminster. Beard was an avid admirer of William Ewart Gladstone (1809–1898), the four-time Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and named it to memorialize his name.

IT'S THE REAL THING PLEDGE. If we sell it, it's the real thing. We guarantee it's the real thing or you get your money back including your delivery costs we this pledge:

GUARANTEED AUTHENTIC OR ALL MONEY BACK. We understand there are counterfeits and knockoffs of vintage products by well known manufacturers for sale all over the internet and in other market places. We use multiple procedures to assure the products we sell are authentic. One procedure we use is to research authenticity through vintage manufacturer catalogs and to report our research in the listing. Sometimes we include a snippet from the catalog to corroborate our research and educate you about the history of the bag. The purpose of reporting what the manufacturer says about its product in the catalog is to verify our research on the authenticity and to educate you about how a vintage product was portrayed in the past. It is not intended to hold our shop out as a representative of the manufacturer. However, if it turns out we are wrong or our research is not correct we guarantee that if we sell you a product represented to be manufactured by a reputable company like Coach, Cole Haan, Ghurka, Filson, Christian Dior, Hartmann, Gucci, or any other company and you have competent evidence that the product is not authentic we will refund your purchase price and delivery cost. In addition, we will pay for return postage.
