Description

There are no other books like these.

I'm sure you've heard of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and its author J R R Tolkien, but if not, you may be living under a rock--but I'm not judging! Rocks are great! Living under one I'm not sure about, but regardless, you should want to know about these books and their amazing author if you don't already.

The reason this set is so valuable and special I'll say right off the bat is that it is nearly scarce to find elsewhere online. These beautiful books may be paperback but they are not your average paperback where the cost of creation was likely very low -- these come off more as works of art, what with their glossy covers and bright pop-jungle-confused-maze-looking artwork and the foldout map at the end of the first book... their designs are just incredible, and the Quality Book Club editions are sure to complete any Tolkien lover's collection not only as "oh, now I have every copy" (which I'm sure is nearly impossible anyway) but more "oh, I have three book that are masterpieces both inside AND OUT. Look at these!" That is what I think you'll feel when you buy these books, because that is what I feel when I look at them, touch them, read them.

J R R Tolkien was such a well-known writer in his time that his legend has lived on today through his works including these, The Hobbit and other shorter tales of his, as well as his criticism and nonfiction writings, because he was also a scholar. The man created such a unique and incredible world, before J K Rowling had a chance to do the same with hers, and he started a "middle earth" obsession when these books were coming out and long afterward. Even one of my favorite bands, Led Zeppelin, references his books in their songs--and more than one! My favorite reference is in Ramble on when it goes, "And in the darkest depths of Mordor, I met a girl so fair, but GOLLUM! And the evil warlock slipped away with her." But Zeppelin also mentions the LOTR, as the books and stories come to be known in shorthand and pop culture, in Over the Hills and Far Away and The Battle of Evermore.

So what is so great about these writings, now that you know the writer himself was great? Well, you could actually spend your whole life studying these works specifically, not even the rest of his prolific bibliography, as some literary scholars have and continue to do. They are that intense with meaning, deep with intricate layers of interpretation and influence and mystical usage of term and phrase, the writing like a whole onion to be sliced and stripped across three separate works that come together to create a trilogy that pretty much started the trend of "trilogies" in fantasy, they are crowning works in that genre and inform and influence all that came after their writing, they are mandatory reading for many and suggested reading for all.

Does that sell this enough for you, those out there yet to read the books? Your interest has to be piqued by now, if it hasn't yet by the many movies and merchandise that circle through our zeitgeist, revolving around Middle Earth and this tale of "The Ring."

And these editions -- there is something special about these Quality Book-of-the-Month-Club 1995 editions that makes them stand out from all the others (and there are many, many others). The artwork doesn't seem to go along with the story or its universe. The books call back to an ancient medieval dark age type time, they involve magic and fantasy and rugged landscape and remind you of mountains and forests and elves and dragons. The cover art of these remind you more of Andy Warhol, of prints you would have up on your wall for up and coming indie bands playing gigs in Boston, of tattoos, even, some fan of Tolkien would have drawn up and scrawled across their skin (and how impressive that tattoo would be!)

These books are a contradiction, and that makes them fascinating and a must-have for the serious collector AND the casual reader. Any book lover would be remiss not to own these three books in this format and condition, so well preserved and oddly remarkable. That Tolkien didn't live to see these editions of his works printed, so we could get his opinion on them, is a tragedy, really. Part of me thinks he would hate them, just as much as I think he would love them. And that make me smile.

And here's the straight information you may be looking for:

-Full titles:
--Book 1: The Fellowship of the Ring
--Book 2: The Two Towers
--Book 3: The Return of the King
-Author: J. R. R. Tolkien
-Format: Special/limited editions, (Quality) Book-of-the-Month-Club , three volumes, paperback/softcover with gloss, full color unique designed covers, full fold-out middle earth world map included pasted in back of first book.
-Condition: Near mint. No writing or rips or anything to show these books were used previously; they truly seem brand new, however curious and quirky they are.
-Publisher: Quality Paperback Book Club New York
-Copyright: 1995 Book of the Month Club Inc. (this edition)
-Date published: 1995
-Provenance: My little secret :)
-Pricing: I priced these books this way for many reasons, the main ones being their condition, their scarcity as a set and the lack of pictures or information coming from competitors where they are listed elsewhere, and their fame (and that of their author!). It was pretty easy to determine their worth, except for the fact they seem absolutely priceless to someone like myself. Looking at the prices of other collections and editions that Tolkien fans are buying/owning/looking for/selling helped as well.

I ordered this as a gift and was very happy with Colleen’s feedback and willingness to help me track down this one of a kind book! It even showed up before Christmas thanks to a speedy delivery despite the short notice. I will definitely be visiting No Other Book Like This again.

This book is BEAUTIFUL! I was so excited to receive it yesterday, so I could read it over Christmas. I read the abridged version of Thomas Wingfold, Curate over a decade ago and loved it, so I have been looking forward to this so much. Thank you!!!!!!!! :-D

FAQs

Absolutely! I'm willing to do anything to get this book to you, but I will not write on it. If it is not in the condition you want, I know preservation techniques and will certainly oblige as best I can. You just need to let me know.
I will wrap the book any way you want. It is special and so are you, you deserve it! I will also write cards, include photographs, anything you'd like that would make this transaction more, well, you.
I won't tell you how to care for your book, but as to how they are cared for now, they are housed in two places -- some are wrapped in plastic in my main room in the part of the house that used to be a quaint B&B, lined on lovely old wooden bookshelves; others are stacked in piles or leaning on cool, creative and different bookends all round the room, and all are given care, attention, and kept away from my dog :)

Others sit in my library, in built-in authentic 1800s wooden and glass-door library shelves that line the walls in a secluded room in a historic home on the shore. With vintage, warm lamplights over the tiny marble fireplace, the library's windows catch plenty of sunlight--the books are in good homes and will arrive undamaged.
If the book comes later than expected this does not mean it was sent late. Every book is sent within 1-3 business days, unless one of the days is a Sunday, then it could be an extra day. This applies to International orders as well, but they might take longer to get to you than in-country orders. If there is a problem, please bring it up with UPS or see Etsy's policies.
I am more than willing to hunt down a specific book for you. This can take time, however, and would be a matter of personal back-and-forth on the site so you would have to keep in contact. There is no guarantee. I'm good at finding things however, and if I cannot find it to sell to you myself I will direct you to where I can find it online, if I can.

Important to note, however, that I may have it in my holdings already so it ALWAYS helps to check in with me. Listings come up continually, and it may just be waiting here to get processed and put up.
Contact me directly via the site and I will do my absolute best to help correct it. There should be no problems.
Always willing to make new friends and take on new jobs or opportunities -- this business does not stop me from working a full or part time job, and I am currently looking, so please contact me! Dempseylynch@gmail.com. I am definitely interested in talking with you and love meeting new people (especially book lovers of course).
Sure! Although the books are priced the way they are and are worth that amount based on a lot of factors (condition compared to others available online, if there are any available online or if it is the only one, age and whether it is signed or special in some way, etc.) I am always willing to hear you out as to why you think the books price is off, and work with you as best I can. I cannot guarantee the price will change, that is bad for my business, but I will listen to you. Don't be afraid to reach out. The worst that can happen is I will say no.

I put the reasons behind my pricing method for each item at the end of the listing so check that out if you're curious too :)
