Description

Promotion SALE for my new Seaside Spree Story Collection. Was $27.00, now $ 20.00, This listing is for "Ode to Venice", a handmade vintage reBAUBLED necklace measuring approximately 20.5", the necklace shown in first 4 photos. Last photo shows a sample of one of my other creations from the Seaside Spree Story Collection and is not part of this listing.
***Seaside Spree Story Collection***
Seaside.... It's an older term so it fits with the feel of my creations that incorporate vintage beads. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, people called what we call the "beach" today the "sea side." You will notice this on very old postcards. Many coastal areas had, and luckily some still have, marshes, barrier islands, and inlets that separated the mainland from the sea. So the first land's edge next to the water, like the an area that faced a creek or marsh with a barrier island on the other side of the water, was called the beach. Sea side was just what it says, the land that stood beside the actual sea. The coast of South Carolina has many wonderful areas like this.
Spree....Unrestricted indulgence, an outburst of activity. My favorite activity is to go to the Seaside, the ultimate indulgence for me! There is always an outburst of activity there, whether I am a spectator to the outburst, sitting in the sand watching the waves, birds, people, or imagining the life that teems beneath the waters . And most times I am very active myself, swimming the sea or beachcombing.
SO...there you have it, the meaning behind Seaside Spree! Love creating using as much vintage supplies as I can. Gives you an unusual piece with built in history. Each listing has a story of what the assemblage represents, always related to the SEA & Seaside. Often the necklaces are not symmetrical, providing what I like to call "funky chunkys" ! This listing is for 20.5" necklace I have fondly named "Ode to Venice".
The reBAUBLED Story: Ode to Venice
"Ode to Venice" , a reBAUBLED vintage bead necklace, has a unique story of inspiration as does every reBAUBLED piece I create!
Rarely do I just sit at the beach. I call myself a serial beachcomber! Starting at about age 5, my dad taught me to find fossil shark's teeth on the South Carolina coast. Never looked back! The bug hit and it hit hard. If there is a shark's tooth to be found on any beach, I can usually spot it no matter how many shells liter the sand (I mean "liter" in the fondest of ways) or how much flotsam and jetsam has washed ashore. Though fossil shark's teeth can be gray, shades of brown, and all in between, it's that jet black mellow somewhat shiny surface that pops out to my trained eye. That's why for years it was my dream to visit Venice, Florida known as the "Shark Tooth Capital of the World." (Many other fossils can be found there also!) I've been 3 times now. Unlike most of southwest Florida that has pristine powder white sand, the sand at Venice is much darker, light charcoal at times, due to the enormous amounts of crushed black fossil material. This makes the water a darker but clear blue. You must see it to appreciate. So "Ode to Venice" embodies the textures, patterns, & colors often found in fossils. And the big ivory iike striped one has a beach ball flavor, thrown in for good measure! (This bead also reminds me of those French cabanas you often see on antique postcards that have the striped canopies!)

The colors incorporated into "Ode to Venice " are black, ivory, caramel brown, aqua, gray aqua, turquoise, several shades of gold including that wonderfully brilliant shimmering deep gold bead, tans and sand colors. Seven of the 12 beads have patterns that mimic fossils or fossil beds. The gold bead along with the large moon glow have much depth. The moon glow bead, the largest bead, is a gray aqua but can appear different depending on the lighting and the background . (Compare it in the photos.) Very hard to photograph the somewhat translucent depth of this beauty. It's like looking through water! Finishes range from matte to moon glow to shiny in order to provide interest and depth. Chain is approximately 20.5" gunmetal and on the average person the top of the center bead will hang about 3.5" below the adam's apple opening. This fits well most clothing necklines, whether a rounded, scoop, or open collared. Varigated colors gives it versatility. For example, any one color in the necklace can tie it to your outfit if you are wearing a hue in the same color family. Versatile!
I use gunmetal plated over brass. This is a thin but strong chain. The black gunmetal shade reminds me of the color of marsh pluff mud in the lowcountry and shade looks good with silver, antique silver, or gold adds to versatility of the necklace. I use vintage beads in my creations, dating from the 1940s-80s with most being mid century, 50s-70s range.
The Seaside Spree Story Collection and "Ode to Venice" are original creations and property of mine and can not be reproduced.
