So these are real pearls? Yes! Here at Mydivinepearls.com, we only offer real cultured pearls! What does cultured mean? Cultured just means that an oyster agriculturist takes the oysters and grow them until they are mature. An irritant (which is usually just a simple grain of sand) is inserted into the oyster which prompts the oyster to start creating the pearl. Once the oysters have completed growing their pearl, they are quickly taken and vacuum sealed to preserve them and their pearl(s)!

Ever wonder how some of the pearls get their color? Some of the colors are all part of the process of cultivated pearls. Colored Akoya pearls like blacks, blues, reds, chocolates, and other bright colors have either undergone cobalt-60 radiation treatment or have been treated with an organic dye. (The dye is injected at the same time as the irritant and the oyster uses that dye while forming the pearl.)

The pearls are still created by the oyster so they are genuine pearls, they just have a little extra help getting the beautiful colors we have available!

Are you wondering how to clean your pearl once you open it? Just rub it with a little salt and water and you are good to go! (Do NOT eat Oyster! Not for Human Consumption.)

Very fun, I love the surprise in not knowing what kind of pearl you're going to get. I got two for my grandmother and mother. The ones I got are a bit on the small side compared to a cultured pearl I have gotten before, but still very unique and beautiful. I got a black/metalic pearl with a pretty teal undertone, and a creamy white.

Packaging was very neat and had a fun patriotic sticker. There was very minimal smell and mess from the oysters, and they were very easy to open especially with the YouTube video instructions. I saved the flat shells to use for crafts aswell.

I'm probably going to order from here again for special occasions. The whole process is just so satisfying and fun. I think it makes a unique gift that's kind of a bargain for the price.

We measure pearls using a jeweler's sizing gauge which approximates sizes in half millimeter increments. Note: Using calipers may give an erroneous reading depending on grip angle and pressure applied. The pearls in the oysters we sell measure between 6mm and 8mm using a jeweler's sizing gauge.
It is the responsibility of the Buyer to ensure their shipping address is correct, legitimate and deliverable through USPS. We are not responsible for items shipped to the wrong address. If an order is made to a wrong address the buyer must cancel that order BEFORE it is processed and shipped, and re-order once they enter the correct address into Etsy.
When drilling your cultured pearl, professional grade drilling equipment is recommended. Professional-Grade Drilling Machine prices start at $300 and top out at about $1,200. The drilling bit should be made of Tungsten using a process that counter bores the nacre as the drilling takes place. Diamond tipped drill-bits can sometimes destroy the pearl without the use of water to cool the bit. Drilling is extremely delicate work, even the most experienced pearl driller will burn, crush or destroy a pearl from time to time because cultured pearls only have a thin layer of nacre. There are two different drilling types: full-drilling and half-drilling.
Full drilling is a hole that goes all the way through a cultured pearl. This type of drilling is used for pearl necklaces, where the string must pass completely through the pearl. The Akoya pearl is drilled using two drill bits from each side for the complete hole. Drilling with one longer drill bit would risk damaging the nacre when it comes out the other side. One slip and the pearl can be completely destroyed.
Half-drilled pearls are used for pearl earrings, rings, pendants, tie tacks, brooches, and other types of similar jewelry. The hole is drilled through half of the pearl, allowing the Akoya pearl to be mounted on the gold setting of the jewelry. Pearls with a single blemish on one side can be cut and then half-drilled in order to make them useful. For instance, for a pearl ring, the pearl may have had an original blemish on the side of the pearl that is attached to the ring. Instead of discarding this pearl, the blemish can be cut off the pearl, and then the half-drilled hole can be drilled on the cut side of the pearl. The pearl is attached on that side to the ring and there still remains a beautiful piece of unblemished pearl jewelry.
Cultured pearls grow in pearl farms. Unlike natural pearls where the process of an oyster creating a pearl occurs accidentally cultured pearl development is controlled. A nucleus is inserted into the soft tissue of the mollusc, either a piece of mantle tissue is used or a mother-of-pearl nucleus is used. The nucleus is usually round in shape as pearls tend to develop into the same shape as the inserted nucleus which acts as a mold. The artificially inserted nucleus which is basically a round bead is nearly as large as a natural pearl. Once the nucleus is inserted into the oyster the pearl growing process is the same as that of a natural pearl. Cultured pearls have a thin layer of nacre, while natural pearls are mostly made of nacre.
The process of culturing pearls revolutionised the pearl industry and meant that pearl farmers could control the cultivation of large numbers of consistently high quality pearls. Natural pearls have become extremely rare because of the huge volumes that were hunted for in the 1800s, which left the world’s natural supply critically low. Add to that the fact that only one in approximately every 10,000 oysters will produce a pearl and of these only a small amount will be of sufficiently high quality. It can take an oyster 5 years to form a tiny 3mm pearl in the wild where as a 7mm cultured pearl can be created from a 6.5mm nucleus in just 3-5 years.
Sometimes even though the oyster is injected with an irritant to prompt the oyster to create the pearl, it can fail to do so and the oyster will not create a pearl.

If this happens, I will gladly send a replacement pearl.
