Description

Vintage silver plated beaker, commemorative of founding of City of Gothenburg, Sweden by King Gustaf II Adolf. The beaker has an emblem of the statue of King Gustaf on the front and his name and the name Gothenburg. The statue, depicted on the beaker, was erected in the Central Square of Gothenburg in 1854.

Research thus far has not yielded any illumination on the date of this beaker or whether it was a tourist item or a commemorative item of greater importance. It does have makers marks on the back, (see picture #3) indicating it may be more than a tourist trinket, but again have not identify either the maker or a date from the marks. The marks are "EL, shield topped with crown, NS".

The beaker is in good condition with respect to physical integrity as there are no dings or other damage to it. The silver plating is worn and the copper base shows through in places. Depending on it's historical significance or collectability, it could be re-plated if desired or left as is to show it's history of use which seems to have been considerable due to the wear it shows.

King Gustaf II Adolf of Sweden was born in 1594 and died in 1632 at a battle in Lutzen, Germany. He reigned as the King of Sweden from 1611 to 1632. During this period he founded the modern Swedish State, was a successful military leader and made Sweden into a major European power. He was a leader of the Swedish forces during the 30 year war. He took control of the Eastern Baltic countries, defeating Poland in doing so and denying Russia access to the Baltic Sea. He founded The Uppsala University in Sweden and also universities in the Baltic States such as Tartu University in Estonia.

The size is 3 3/4 inches tall, and 2 inches in diameter at top.
