These earrings depict the guard cells of the stomata, pores on the surface of the plant that facilitate gas exchange for the plant. Through the stomata, plants take in carbon dioxide for photosynthesis and respire oxygen. The opening and closing of the stoma is regulated by osmotic pressure in the guard cells and is dependent on carbon dioxide concentration, light intensity, humidity and other environmental factors. The guard cells depicted in this pendant show the large nucleus in each guard cell as well as the chloroplasts. Designed in collaboration with Prof. Keiko Torii, University of Washington.

The bronze, brass and silver jewelry is created by 3D-printing in wax followed by metal casting in solid bronze, solid brass or solid sterling silver. They are lightly polished after casting to give it a smooth glossy texture.

To prevent waste and overstock, the jewelry is not made until you order. Please allow 3-4 weeks for printing and shipping. All items are gift-wrapped in original, recyclable Ontogenie packaging and then shipped insured by registered mail, worldwide.

The earrings will be shipped with sterling silver earring backs (not shown).

Each earring measures 1 cm in the longest dimension (top to bottom) and the post diameter is 0.85mm.
