Description

Original painting by Douglass Truth, oil on canvas, stretched and ready to hang.

I know it's an obscure title. Let me explain. The Mayans' cosmology said that the Creators had made many worlds - many of our worlds, that is - and that they didn't really know what they were doing. There weren't instructions for making a good, functional universe, apparently. The Gods were on their own, and did the best they could, but their first efforts at building Our World were just no good, and they failed in a spectacular manners. In one of them, the kitchen appliances, the pots and pans and spatulas and so on, all started flying violently around, hitting the humans, some earlier not-so-great version of humans, in the heads and killing them all.

Now this might not be the narrative a smart artist would use to sell a painting, but I leave that up to you. I love kitchens, cooking, and all the attendant things, such as eating, but more than eating, I love to serve food. And this is, most importantly, a kitchen that I would LOVE to use, to live in, to cook in, some chicken broth simmering away for borscht a couple of days later, oh, here's that waffle iron, yes, it's Sunday morning and everyone is coming over for my famous buckwheat waffles.

You see what I mean. It's really no matter about the creating (flawed or no) and destroying various versions of our world, and, naturally into the bargain, us along with it. We should just take care of each other. And for me, that means cooking and serving and being the best person I can be this time around.

Once this print is framed, I will post a photo. Meanwhile, let it suffice to say that this is my favorite by this artist, and just so happens to be his, as well! The colors in this print are so striking and vivid, I'm both amazed and thrilled to have the privilege of having this piece in my home. Douglass Truth's artwork speaks to me in volumes. In one word, this man and his art are nothing less than breathtaking!
