Description

A lovely, matte-finished vase with a hand-painted Art Deco motif of a bird and berry-studded branches manufactured for Aluminia Faience. The mark on the bottom was in use from 1929 to 1950 to mark unbreakable and non-gloss porcelain, and I believe the style of the decoration dates this piece to the early years of that period. The information I've been able to track down online tells me that the artist for this piece was Nils Thorsson, but I don't present that as a definitive fact. I've found information for this particular line to be very challenging to locate.

The vase is approximately 4.75" tall x 3.5" wide at the widest point and the opening at the top is 3.0" across. There are a series of marks on the bottom, as seen in picture #3 above. From the information I've been able to locate, the Aluminia Faience company merged with Royal Copenhagen in 1882. I'm unsure whether this piece is by Royal Copenhagen or Aluminia Faience. The marks, particularly the three waves in blue underglaze, lead me to conclude it's Royal Copenhagen since that's a mark that appears on their work, but again, I was struggling to determine who made what & when. What is known is that this piece is from Coenhagen, Denmark, and that the "X" isn't present to mark the piece as a factory second. Pieces with that designation have a slash engraved on them through the triple-wave motif on the bottom. What the "X" denotes in this case is unknown to me.

The piece is in excellent condition with no cracks, chips, or repairs. There is a bit of dirt embedded in the foot ring, but everything else is in order and as manufactured.

All in all, a charming addition to any collection of Danish art pottery!
