Description

Saddle Collection Blank Page Journal - Mini. (Photo #3 full Mini collection - not all available for sale)

Saddle Collection:
These unique, classic & timeless journals are made from old saddles beyond repair; that would otherwise have been buried in property dumps, classed as unrepairable by saddlers & abandoned by owners or simply only able to be used for display purposes. Sourced through my nationwide travels, the process of “deconstruction” gives it new life; with the transformation reconstruction into something interesting & unique as a journal that can be carried further into the future, in its newest form. There are stories & memories, smells & feelings that are aroused from the simplicity in design, using only what comes from the saddle itself, or is associated with horses, to embellish the covers. The saddle will sometimes have sewing from its original maker and together with the original furnishings these are incorporated & used to embellish the overall design giving a rustic and dated appearance. The brown leather closure strap is cut from cowhide & hand-sewn on the back with a brown leather keeper cut from the same hide and sewn to the front.

Coptic Binding (or sewing):
Was developed in the 2nd century A.D. by the early Egyptian Christians in Egypt. Very few Coptic Binding examples survive in their original bound encasements, although there is evidence that the text was usually held between boards and these may or may not have been covered with leather. Besides the fact that this form of binding was far more convenient and efficient than the scrolls which would have been tedious to roll and unroll in search of needed information, the main advantage of the Coptic sewing, (because there is no gluing of the spine), is that it opens flat and could easily be written on both sides of the page. In later times other more decorative stitches were created enhancing the already exposed spine ends of the sections (signatures) of paper, making up the body of the book.

Fabriano Accademia Drawing Paper (120gsm):
Is artist paper from a maker with over seven centuries’ experience, using both traditional and modern techniques to create the very highest quality products so you can be sure your artworks will be preserved. It is eco friendly & made of high quality lignin free and acid free cellulose, guaranteeing long conservation over many years. Produced with 100% of ECF pulp (Elemental Chlorine Free), FSC certified (©1996 Forest Stewardship Council A.C.) from sustainable forests responsibly managed, respectful of environmental, social and economic standards.
Its internal and external sizing renders it resistant to repeated erasures causing minimal damage to the surface. It is an extremely durable paper, has a soft, textured feel and is a wonderful surface recommended for artists and amateurs for printmaking, sketching and drawing with pencil, graphite (and particularly charcoal), pastel, coloured pencils and ink.

One-of-a-Kind & Totally Original Journals for that hard-to-buy-for person in your life!!
Many hours are spent in making each journal as unique & different as the individuals who will be attracted to a totally different journal experience. I believe that people are beginning to look for things that are beautifully crafted, as was done in bygone years, as opposed to mass produced & cheaply made. Every aspect of these journals is done by hand; from the cutting of the saddle leathers, the hand-ripping of papers for a more interesting deckled edge, the using of waxed linen threads to bind the signatures and covers together, to the final hand sewing of closure straps or saddle furnishings. They are beautiful to hold evoking memories of days gone by.

These journals are of heirloom quality & made to contain the stories of all time.........yours!!

Please feel free to contact me through Etsy if you would like to know more about the Full Saddle Collection with various sizes & formats, of which this journal has come.

*Note- The mini journal's use would be limited due to its small & compact size
