By • Edgar A. Guest

Date • 1944

Details • Eighth Edition, The Reilly & Lee Co. Publishers, Hardcover, 937 Pages, 8.50 x 5.45 x 1.75 Inches

Description • Edgar Albert Guest who lived in Detroit, Michigan, was a prolific English-born American poet who was popular in the first half of the 20th century and became known as the People's Poet. His poems often had an inspirational and optimistic view of everyday life. From his first published work in the Detroit Free Press until his death in 1959, Guest penned some 11,000 poems which were syndicated in some 300 newspapers and collected in more than 20 books

Guest's most motivating poem:

You can do as much as you think you can,
But you'll never accomplish more;
If you're afraid of yourself, young man,
There's little for you in store.
For failure comes from the inside first,
It's there, if we only knew it,
And you can win, though you face the worst,
If you feel that you're going to do it.

--Excerpt from "The Secret of the Ages" (1926)

Condition • Fabric cover on spine shows significant rubbing and age wear, but is still mostly in tact. Cover shows some slight staining and discoloration. Inscription to previous owner is on first page. A few places have cracked glue for binding but not fully, and book can still be read as is although does need to be handled carefully. All pages show slight indentation near top from an unknown source but most likely from storage over the last few decades. All pages are yellowed, and a few pages have bend marks from the past owner saving favorite passages. General vintage and shelf wear are present; please see photos for condition.

Please Note • Photos are taken with natural light. This combined with various monitor settings means vintage items might appear slightly different upon arrival. Making a purchase signifies acknowledgment of shop policies: https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheBookCottage/policy
