Description

Indonesian Black Amber is a wonderful ancient natural tree resin with many unique characteristics.
Indonesia is made up of over 17,000 islands, so there could be many different sources and ages of amber from Indonesia. The main island sources are Sumatra, Java, and Borneo. The dark areas can be very dark, and sometimes has to be cut very thin in order for light to pass through it. Besides for the black organic debris there are also insects to be found in some pieces. The amber you get from me has not been checked for insects as you usually have to sand or cut a “window” in the piece to be able to inspect it for insects, or anything else.
Not all the amber is dark. Some pieces are your classic “honey” amber color. Some pieces have a nice reddish flash and, of course, there is the highly sought after “blue” amber. There is a location on the island of Sumatra known for it's blue amber, but I have seen nice blue-ish pieces in the black from Java and Sumatra. And some pieces look like they have sections of light brown wood in them notably from the island of Borneo.
Overall, this amber is a little brittle, but I have cut several dozen pieces and do not have a problem with it. I have drilled holes in some pieces that are strong, but some pieces will shatter where you are drilling. I have worked this amber on my regular diamond stone lapidary tools but it can be worked by hand with files and sandpaper if you wish. Start with a file or 60 – 100 grit sandpaper to shape and then finer and finer grits to get a smooth polish. Sanding by hand you should achieve an acceptable smoothed surface with 600 – 1000 grit paper. I polish most stones to 14,000 and above on my machines, but do not see a need to go above 3000 grit for polish on this amber. The hotter you get the piece the more likely it is to crack, so be careful when using power tools.

One pound will fit in a large, 12.5” x 9.5” USPS envelope and ships for $6.65.
If you are interested in 3 or more pounds, you can contact me for best shipping arrangement.
