A character from Japanese folklore, this image is a spider who transformed herself into a young girl. A poor farmer saved the spider from a snake. Out of gratitude she became a young girl to weave beautiful silk for him.

Her kimono is decorated with a spiderweb and dragonfly motif. Gouache highlighted with colored pencil. A small 'm" in the lower right is the artist's signature.

Framed in a slightly distressed antique multi-level frame which features faux tortoiseshell and Eastlake-style figures incised into black shellac. Frame size: 14"w x 16"h x 2"d. Image size: 5" x 7".
