Description

Add a touch of Mexican movie star kitsch to your vintage décor with this rare c1960 Cantinflas (Mario Moreno) marionette — a fabulous handcrafted folk art dancing string puppet made of composition and wood that’s complete and in excellent vintage condition!

This cool rendition of Moreno is about 15.25” long when “standing” (measured from the top of his straw hat to the bottom of his shoes). The features on his composition head/face are hand painted, his torso and shoes are wood and his hands are made of hard molded plastic. The puppet’s real-fabric outfit resembles one Moreno wore in the 1960 film “Pepe.”

The Cantinflas marionette is still attached via his five original heavy strings to a wooden paddle stamped “Hecho En Mexico.” The paddle has a wire hanger attached to its top side. I’ll try to wrap the puppet so the strings don’t get tangled but, if they do (likely!), it’s easy to untie and reposition the offending string(s)!

The string puppet is in excellent vintage condition, with the only issues of note being a few small (typical) crazing marks on his composition head and a slight rusty patina on the small tack nails that hold his clothing in place. A small stretch of the hat’s blue edge trim was not sewn in place during its creation.

According to a Wikipedia article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cantinflas), Mario Alfonso Moreno (1911-1993) — known professionally as Cantinflas — was a prolific Mexican comic film actor, producer, and screenwriter and an iconic figure in Mexico and Latin America. He appeared in more than 55 films, often portraying impoverished campesinos (or peasants).

The article states Moreno has been referred to as the “Charlie Chaplin of Mexico,” and Charlie Chaplin himself once commented that Moreno was the best comedian alive. In the U.S., Moreno is best remembered as co-star with David Niven in the Academy Award winner for Best Picture 1956 film “Around the World in 80 Days,” for which Moreno won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.

Shipping policies

Your item will be packaged with utmost care, using clean recycled items like bubble wrap and boxes when possible. Doing so reduces shipping costs and pleases Mother Nature. I’m confident you’ll be pleased when your package arrives!

I charge only actual shipping fees using primarily U.S. Post Office Priority Mail service, which has proven to be speedy and reliable (and automatically includes tracking and insurance up to $100). Large, heavy items are typically shipped via FedEx Home Delivery service.

Know that I have a great track record for getting orders shipped out within one business day (oftentimes within hours!) of payment confirmation.

If you’d like me to use a faster shipping service, a cheaper shipping method, to add insurance or arrange for signature confirmation please just convo me prior to shipping and I’ll gladly recalculate costs!

And combined shipping? For sure! If you don't convo me before buying, no problem: I promptly issue refunds for shipping overages of $2 and up.

All listed shipping prices are for the contiguous United States. Please convo for rates to Alaska, Hawaii and international destinations prior to purchase. Please bear in mind that international buyers are responsible for all customs duties, taxes, levies or fees — and that the shop is not responsible for delays due to customs.
