Description

Take a step back into the past...hold in your hands a mug inspired by something made 1000 years ago.

Imagine a cold winter's night in Scandinavia 1000 years ago. The wind howls through the forest, blowing snow hard against a small hut. A Viking warrior and his shield-maiden partner are huddling by the fire, hands cradling the rounded shape of their ceramic mugs from which they sip a hot drink, trying to keep the frost from their fingers...

>>> Each piece is lovingly handcrafted to order over 3-4 weeks. Please click on "+ More" to see important and exciting details! <<<

This design was inspired by an archaeological find on the Swedish island of Gotland dated to 1000 CE. The handle reflects a design feature often found on traditional northern Scandinavian drinking cups known as guksi by the Sami people, kuksa in Finland, and kåsa in Sweden.

👉 Larger and smaller mugs, and other styles, are available in my Etsy store: https://etsy.me/2PiZ3RH 👈

The side of this mug can be personalised with up to 20 words. The words are impressed into the clay before it is fired, so they are definitely permanent.

In the "Add a note to StoneCatCeramics" box, on the bottom left of your cart, please let me know the name/words/phrase to imprint into the clay, along with any symbols or letter modifications.

Some simple shapes and symbols are available (see listing photograph; one symbol = one word), as well as:
     - diacritic marks such as accents or umlauts
     - modified letters (as in Swedish, Norwegian, etc.)
     - Elder or Younger Futhark runes; Anglo Saxon Futhorc runes
     - Asian characters
     - anything you can think of - just ask!

• • • How long will it take before I can enjoy my new mug? • • •
Every item is personally hand made by me, so it will take 3 to 4 weeks to finish your creation before being shipped to your door.

Note: shipping costs for locations outside Australia does not include tracking, but you can add it on if you wish.

US & Canadian Customers: If your combined shipping reaches US$24 your shipping will be upgraded to an express service (4 to 6 days) with tracking.

• • • The Process • • •
Each and every piece is made in my little home studio in Brisbane, Australia, by my hands either on the pottery wheel or by sculpting. The piece is made from a strong stoneware clay which is fired twice - first to 1000°C (1832°F) to make the clay ready for the glaze, then to 1300°C (2370°F) to melt the glaze and make it as strong as possible.

I use rainwater and solar power, and I recycle everything I can to reduce my footprint on the earth. Nothing is more important to me than making sure I do everything I can to protect our precious planet.

FAQs

I have listed the basic Airmail shipping & packing costs for locations outside Australia. This does not include tracking; you can add it on if you wish.

After shipping over 1000 items, only 1 package has gone astray. However: >> if you do not add tracking, I can't be responsible for lost items. Sorry!

I've done it this way to give everyone a choice about how much they want to spend on their shipping, and also how much they want to gamble on the postal service! You're the best person to judge the reliability of your own country's postal service.
Everything in my shop is handmade by me, either on the pottery wheel or by sculpting clay by hand. This means that those little glaze drips, or shape differences, or unusual patterns are just part of the handmade process. Each is guaranteed to be completely unique.

Consider the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi: beauty in imperfection, asymmetry, irregularity, nature, and simplicity. These characteristics embody handmade items. Embrace them!
Please check the delivery address carefully! If an order is returned to me after long journey across the ocean and back, I will contact the customer immediately. Unfortunately, the buyer will then be responsible for the shipping cost to a different address.

Returns are quite rare, but I encourage my customers to check their address and track the parcel, if possible, so they know if a delivery attempt has been made.
