Description

With this instant digital download, you'll receive an Emergent Reader as a PDF.

The word families in this story are -on and -ot. Your child will love reading about a "tot" named "Cot" who is just too young to ride and play with his older siblings.

The book is full of 3 letter words with short vowels (in this case, o). This type of word is often referred to as CVC (meaning "consonant-vowel-consonant") and being able to read and distinguish between these CVC "families" is a fundamental part of your child's early reading development.
Equally important is the ability to read "sight words" quickly and accurately. Sight words are words that we cannot easily decode (or "sound out") and we must learn to recognize them- quickly and accurately to build fluency.
As current research shows, young readers benefit from repeated exposure to (and a variety of hands-on interactions with) both word families and sight words.

Here are the ways in which your little learner will interact with CVC and sight words with this learning resource!
Your rockstar reader will:

1. Read the story. This printable is a black and white booklet, and your child will LOVE using it as a little coloring book. After this reading, they can use the dinosaur-themed checklist to monitor their progress, checking off the first dinosaur to mark that the book has been read. This is especially useful for teachers who are using this packet as homework or as a literacy center that students will be working on over a number of days!

2. Read the story a second time with a pencil in hand. They will focus on word families with this read, circling all of the -ot words and underlining all of the -on words in the story.

3. Read the story a final time, using a color-code to draw a different color over each of the following sight words:

*can
*he
*not
*ride
*saw
*she
*they
*this

After completing all 3 activities, readers will receive an "out of sight and dynamite" reading certificate!

These booklets are designed to provide your little learners with 3 accessible, hands-on, and engaging reading activities that will promote their speed, their accuracy and (most importantly) their LOVE of reading. I've always worked very hard to give my students exciting reading activities. I want to create lifelong bookworms, and this starts by providing positive reading experiences. I aim to give your child nothing less.

My grandson's love it (ages 4 & 5). I used clear contact paper over the printed sheets before I cut them all out. I also added the names of the picture on the back of each scoop to help them out if needed.
I is for Ice Cream-Scoops of Sounds! Summer Alphabet Activity for Phonics Fun- Print, Play, Learn-Preschool, PreK, Kindergarten, Homeschool.
