Description

This is an extremely rare original colored engraving on thick paper including a copy of the verse by Clifton Bingham

Little Men, Verses by Clifton Bingham, Pub E P Dutton & Co, New York, c1890

Size: 11 in x 14 in (approx); 28 cm x 35.5 cm (approx)

It is in good condition. The bottom right corner is torn, but this can easily be matted out. The other corners are a little bumped. There is a small chip at the center left edge. There is a crease at the bottom left corner.

Ernest Nister(1841-1906) was a publisher and printer of movable books for children and paper ephemera such as greeting cards, post cards, and calendars. He was born in Darmstadt, Germany and later had an office in London. He refined the techniques used in the design of "magic windows," "dissolving picture," and pop-up books, publishing them from his firm based in Nuremberg, a toy-making center of the nineteenth century. Although not the first to invent pop-up books, he was the first to invent automatic pop-up books. Before Nister, pop-ups had to be manually maneuvered into an upright position. He collaborated with the English children's verse and song writer, Clifton Bingham to publish this edition of "Little Men."

Graham Clifton Bingham was born in 1859 in Bristol, England. At the age of 16, soon after his father's death, he entered the family's extensive bookselling business. It was probably shortly after 1881 that his mother died, and the bookselling business was sold. He joined the staff of the Cheltenham Examiner. Clifton Bingham provided many verses for the lavishly printed picture books produced by the firms of Nister, Raphael Tuck, Blackie and Alf Cooke.

These delightful vintage prints would be great framed in a nursery.
