Description

This listing is for a single PRINT ON CANVAS of my painting "You Belong To Me " from the four-part painting series, "Le Tigre Quattre".

Dimensions: 12" x 16"

1" thick canvas, with wrapped images of the painting going around the outside edges. Ready to hang, no frame needed.

The original painting was done in acrylics, by me, the artist RARABIRD.

My signature is found in the water below a lilypad at the bottom right corner of the painting.

The theme of this painting is based on the lyrics of the ukulele song from the 1930's "You Belong To Me", combined with the story of Little Black Sambo, The movie "The Jerk", with a little undercurrent of Tiki thrown in, and some other minor references.

This painting series was inspired by a vintage 1950's hipster bar in Madison, Wisconsin called Le Tigré Lounge, which his covered wall-to-wall in tiger figurines, tiger paintings and tiger paraphernalia. The young owner who inherited this bar from his father, sits behind the bar and plays ukulele to amuse himself during down times. The first time I walked in to this fabulous blast from the past, he was playing "You Belong To Me" on his ukulele, because he had seen Steve Martin sing it to Bernadette Peters in the 1979 movie "The Jerk"...my favorite movie of all time!

The third painting in the series, "You belong To Me" finds our hero, Tiberius Tiger on romantic rowboat ride with the object of his affection, Tia the Tigress. He has stopped rowing to serenade her with his infectious ukulele in one last attempt to regain her affections before she marries another. This is his last-ditch effort to convince her that he is the love of her life, and he is laying it on thick with the moonlight and his cooing. Tia seems to be falling for it hard.

Details include the permeating theme of the story of Little Black Sambo. Sambo carried a green parasol through the jungle as he strolled in his fine new clothes, but the tigers stole everything he had. Tia holds a representation of this green parasol. The tigers also snatched Sambo's purple shoes and put them on their ears, pretending they were hats. Our Tiberius wears a purple Pork-Pie Fedora in honor of the shoes on the thieving tiger's heads. He also sports a lei of white an yellow plumeria flowers, left over from when he was entertaining at the luau, and a white choker made of puka shells.

The boat in which they float merrily downstream recalls the charming nursery-rhyme elopement of the Owl and the Pussycat, which began with the lines:

The Owl and the Pussy-cat went to sea
In a beautiful pea green boat,
They took some honey, and plenty of money,
Wrapped up in a five pound note.
The Owl looked up to the stars above,
And sang to a small guitar,
'O lovely Pussy! O Pussy my love,
What a beautiful Pussy you are,
You are,
You are!
What a beautiful Pussy you are!'

Surrounding the couple in their vessel are pink lotus and lilypads floating on the river, where a tiny, blue, poison dart frog enjoys the lulling tune and admires the beautiful tigress and her lovely, relaxed smile. A japanese float has been turned into a votive lamp that bathes the couple in soft candlelight. In the background, the silhouettes of palm trees line the tropical shore.

Does Tiberius win back the hand of his lost love? The World will never know.

Custom paintings can also be requested. Please contact me, RARABIRD, the artist and Esty seller, with your ideas for a commissioned piece. I mainly work in Tiki, Fantasy, Mermaid, Nautical, Exotic and Tropical themes.
