Description

Mexican Amber Necklace (Chain not included)

Finished Chiapas amber - This beautiful dark cognac and wild honey coloured amber necklace has been skillfully crafted by indigenous Mayan artisans in the Chiapas region of Mexico. Chiapas amber is some of the rarest amber in the entire world, making up only a fraction of a percentage of global amber production.

It is 2.5cm tall and 1.5cm at it's widest part.

**************************************************************************************************************************************

Amber is a natural time capsule, a frozen piece of history from millions of years ago. It is formed from fossilized resin from the bark of an ancient, long extinct tree, often entombing flora and fauna (known as "inclusions".)

Collections of amber have been found at prehistoric sites throughout the world, and worked amber in the form of beads and amulets have been dated to around 11,000 BCE. Many cultures believed that amber had magical, religious, or medicinal properties. The ancient Maya traded and offered it as tribute to the Aztecs and the Spanish conquistadors tell of the Aztec emperor, Moctezuma II stirring his chocolate with an amber spoon...

Amber is currently mined in 2 primary regions. The Baltic and the Dominican (which includes the Mexican Chiapas). Dominican amber as a whole makes up only 10% of the global market, and our Chiapas amber makes up only a small percentage of that, with only about 100kg mined per month in the entire region it is some of the rarest amber in the world.

Chiapas amber tends to be more clear and more likely to contain fossils than Baltic amber. This amber ranges again from lemon to honey to cognac to cherry. The red amber from this region is naturally red and not treated like Baltic cherry amber. Chiapas amber also tends to be more fluorescent under UV and untreated when it comes to market unlike Baltic amber.
