Description

Hello:

This blue carnival glass plate was made by Fenton to commemorate Lafayette With Washington at Valley Forge during the Revolutionary War. Fenton began producing these in 1975 for the Bicentennial Anniversary. It is very difficult to see in the pictures, so here is what is inscribed on the back of this glass plate.

"In recognition of the friendship of the Marquis De Lafayette on the Bicentennial Anniversary of the nation he helped bring into being: The United States of America at Valley Forge in 1777, the young volunteer, Lafayette, and his new commander, George Washington, began a friendship that was to last the rest of their lives." Signed "Fenton".

This plate is 8 inches in diameter. It is one inch tall. There is a border of leaves and berries punctuated by fleur de lis shapes. The beautiful blue carnival glass reflects colors of magenta, green and sapphire. The plate is in good condition. However, note that there is some wear on the back rim, probably where it rested on a wall, and a mark that was likely made by a plate hanger. Neither will be visible from the front and will not compromise the glass.

This would be a great gift for a history lover or history teacher. As I was researching this plate I read up on the events at Valley forge. If you have not thought of this in many years, do revisit this piece of American history. So interesting.
