Four Footed Folk, or the Children of Farm and Forest, was published in 1914 by Whitman Publishing Company. Written by Elizabeth Gordon and illustrated in a singularly charming manner by Laurine Stout, it is unpaginated but includes aproximately 48 illustration of animals, often in human garb, and a little 4-line poem by Gordon. Ol' Elizabeth had a rather droll sense of humor and a rather uncanny ability to capture an animal's nature in a 4-line ditty.

Stout's illustrations are delightful -- very accurate renderings of the critters, even when they are dressed like people. And her illustrations range from an Angora cat to a jackal to an armadillo to a sloth. It's a pretty amazing range. I wish I could run a photo of every page. All the illustrations are very detailed and clever; every time I turned the page I had a new favorite.

This gem is very rare, and would be a prize item in anyone's collection.

This 9 x 6 inch book itself is in very good condition. The major flaw is a 3 inch crack in the exterior cover along the upper part of the front spine. There is also some rubbing on the back of the cover and a bit of rubbing along the edges of the hardboard cover. You can see the illustration is is very bright and clean. These little books were sold in boxes, and what remains of the cover of the box is pictured next to the book. It's obviously worn, but it's still partially with us.

The interior is in excellent condition. The binding is solid, the pages very securely attached, no inscriptions, no spotting or foxing and no rips or tears. It honestly seems like it was unread, or very carefully handled when it was opened. For a 96-year-old, it's very, very sound and clean.
