Material

vintage georgette sari

beautiful pink and white flowy soft silk scarf with embroidered, sequin edges.

This fabric is so light and it just flows like water. Very unique.

This shawl was made (by me) from vintage sari. The fabric is a very fine, pink, and white silk georgette (similar to chiffon, but softer and with a nicer drape) with little specks of gold and light blue. The silk was hand-dyed in Rajasthan using the leheria technique (see below for a description).

The scarf measures 45 inches long by 20 inches wide.

Leheria technique:
Leheria (from the Rajashthani word for wave), is a tie-dying technique practiced in Rajasthan, India. The silk or thin cotton is rolled diagonally and tied at intervals. This is then repeatedly dipped in natural dyes and allowed to dry. When the fabric is unrolled after drying, beautiful wave-like patterns are revealed. It is a "visual invocation of water" (Mita Kapur).

Wash gently by hand in cold water. Hang to dry. Don't press!

This is made from antique sari and may have signs of wear such as small, light stains or tiny holes. I do my very best to insure that each piece is as close to perfect as possible, but please remember that they came from saris that have been worn and loved by one or more women. If there is something that is unacceptable to you, that I missed, I will gladly take the piece back.

I purchase saris from a single mother in Delhi, who runs her own business selling vintage and antique fabrics. She acquires these saris from women during trips to remote villages throughout India. In this way, she provides a much-needed income to these villages and to herself and her son. It's very cool being a part of this network!
