Description

IMPORTANT NOTICE -- We are on a short break. Purchases you make now from our shop will ship on Friday, September 28th, 2018. We're still available to answer questions.Thank you for your patience! Wayne and Linda Raúl da Bernarda, a factory founded in 1875 in Alcobaça, Portugal, produced this striking, tall bottle vase in the 1950's and into the 1960's. Its graphic, stylized designs of a Portuguese woman, the sardine-eating striped cat and the colorful Alcobaçan houses are set on a granular, matte black glaze. The slightly rough, tactile surface contrasts beautifully with the shiny polychrome enamels. The enamels were applied by hand on the incised (sgraffitoed) designs, in some cases so thickly that they lend a three dimensional quality to them. The interior is coated with a yellow glossy glaze, again a nice contrast. The motifs and glazes used on this scarce vase are very much in tune with the modernist ceramics from mid-century Italy and Germany.

The vase is 13 1/4 inches tall, with a mouth 1 1/2 inches wide and a base 5 inches in diameter. It weighs a sturdy 1 pound, 10 ounces and sits very flat and stable. Its condition is very good; it would appear almost new, if not for a small chip on the dry bottom rim {see photograph #3, lower left on the picture of the bottom}. The marks on the black-glazed bottom are hand written in pink enamel and read 637/17; R.B. {Raúl da Bernarda}; Alcobaca and Portugal. This vase is an exciting find for art pottery collectors and admirers of modernism.
--- Note: There is a Raúl da Bernarda Museum in Alcobaça where one can see the full range of their ceramics from the company's 133 year history.

First, my purchase review: This is a gorgeous, colorful copper enamel bowl, in excellent vintage condition and exactly as described. Shipping was super fast, and my lovely bowl was carefully and safely packaged.

Next, my review of the sellers, PrimpingYourHome: Linda and Wayne are incredibly nice, helpful people! When I was having trouble with my Etsy account, they contacted Etsy to try and find a solution, and spent a lot of time sending me supportive emails, until I finally found the right fix.

With all the negativity in the world today, a chance encounter with strangers as wonderful as this couple is beyond heartwarming. Obviously, PrimpingYourHome has my absolute highest recommendation!! 👍💜💜💜💜💜
