Description

This listing is for a PRINT ON CANVAS of my painting "Expedition Beyond the Reef".

Dimensions: 20"x 24"

1" thick canvas, with wrapped images of the painting going around the outside edges.

The original painting was done in acrylics, by me, the artist RARABIRD.

My signature is found at the bottom right corner, in the froth of the waves, between the pintail feathers of the frigate bird.

The theme of this painting is about the 1947 Expedition of Anthropologist Thor Heyeredahl who led an expedition across the Pacific by raft from Peru to the Tuamoto Reef in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and made it safely to the Polynesian island of Raoroia.

Thor and his crew of 5 Norwegians and one Swede went out to prove that is was possible that the South Americans of Peru were quite capable of settling the Pacific Islands in ancient times simply by sailing with the help of westerly winds on a raft made of balsa wood. He proved his point by building a raft out of all ancient materials: no wires, nails or welding, no motors or modern electrical equipment, and sailing for 101 days across the ocean with only a sextant and the wind in the sails.

The image on the sail was painted by one of the crew members to represent the ancient South American tribe leader, "Kon Tiki" (Or "Qontiqi") who was supposedly a light-skinned, blued eyed man with a white beard that led a tribe on the continent.

The only female on board the crew was Lorita, the green parrot. She was loved especially by one of crew members, but was lost at sea in a violent storm before they reached their destination.

The men knew they were nearing land when after 3 months of only seeing fish, sharks and whales in the waters, they finally spotted a black frigate bird in the sky. With this sight, they knew that land could not be far off.

My painting captures a few of these historical moments....Thor on the mast, spotting land, a crew member witnessing the frigate bird in the air, and the broken-hearted crew member at the helm realizing he has just his beloved parrot, Lorita.

In reality, the raft and crew did not make it over the Tuamotu Reef, but instead their raft crashed onto it. They abandoned the raft and were able to walk to the shore of Raoroia Island and make contact with the outside world again, to report their safe conclusion to their journey. The second expedition Heyerdahl departed on made it safely to the Island of Rapa Nui (Easter Island). My painting depicts the crew and the raft going BEYOND their first expedition, and making it safely over the reef, to the safe waters of Rapa Nui. (The dark reef can be seen through the waves just underneath the raft). The famous Easter Island Moai statues can be seen on the far, treeless shore.

The spirit of this painting is about challenging yourself to follow your heart, to dare to dream, to go out and do what you think is impossible, and reaching your goal triumphantly. It is about the fire you find within yourself to reach your destiny.

Custom paintings can also be requested. Please contact me, RARABIRD, the artist and Esty seller, with your ideas for a commissioned piece. I mainly work in Tiki, Fantasy, Mermaid, Nautical, Exotic and Tropical themes.

International shipping can be calculated per destination.

All prints are printed ON DEMAND. It takes one week to process: place the order at the printer, get printed, varnished, stretched on a wooden frame, hardware attached to the back for hanging, and packaging the print for shipping. Shipping and handling may take up to one week. Expect TWO WEEKS from the date of placing your order to receiving your print.
