Description

There is no other book like this one.

Description to come! I wish I could list the table of contents here for you, but I need to get more listings up, so I will do it another day. Just know what's inside is beyond magical and some of the most famous writers of fairy tales and children's literature, including those from anonymous writers passed down through generations and simply known as "folk tales," breathe life from the pages and bring you to another world. Along with Beatrice Stevens' amazing artistry, altogether this book is priceless. Putting a price on it was extremely difficult, I'll say that much. You won't find this anywhere else, and I cannot wait to describe it for you in more detail :) 2/9/17 - clyn

And here's the straight information you might be looking for:

-Full title: The Atlantic Treasury of Childhood Stories
-Editor/Selector: Mary D. Hutchinson Hodgkins
-Illustrator: Beatrice Stevens
-Format: Hardcover, FIRST Edition, paste-down illustration and title page on front, colored frontispiece and black and white illustrations throughout. Brightly-colored Beatrice Stevens original orange endpapers, with a sticker of an elf with a big book in front of him, entitled "Billings' music and toys and bookshop for children, Providence R.I." tiny on the bottom inside corner of the front endpapers, grey and white.
-Condition: The book is in good condition with almost no marks on the outside aside from one thin (thread-thin) line through the bottom left half of the front paste-down image by Beatrice Stevens. A few almost invisible lines on the back cover and darkening/bolding around the title/publisher information on the spine, from age. Inside no marks or rips, stains, etc. Inscribed "Gene - Christmas 1928" on blank page before front illustration and title page. Sticker mentioned above, the size of a quarter.
-Publisher: The Atlantic Monthly Press, Boston
-Copyright: 1924 The Atlantic Monthly Press
-Date published: 1924
-Provenance: I picked this up (thank god!) in a small part of a vintage bookshop a couple months ago, where I was looking specifically for works by Dinah Maria Mulock Craik, one of my favorite authors of all time, and I saw it across the room and was drawn to it immediately. It was selling for a sinful price and I knew instantly looking at the Beatrice Stevens artwork I had to have it; little did I know the treasures inside, truly befitting of the title, with four hundred pages of BEAUTIFUL illustrations by Stevens accompanying an incredible number of famous authors' tales and poetry inside, and some only signed "Scottish Folk Tale" and the like, including literary cornerstones like Alice and the White Knight by Lewis Carroll, Cinderella by Charles Perrault, Little Snow White (Germanic Fairy Tale), works by Hans Christian Andersen, and more that I hadn't even known of. The only reason I'm selling it is in the hope that a child will have this book read to them, then read it on their own as they grow, and they can own it with the special attachment I know they will have to it, all their lives. Previous to me, a young boy (I can only imagine he was a young boy) named Gene owned the book in 1928, and signed it at Christmas, when I'm guessing he received it as a present :) There is also a sticker noting (as I've noted above) a children's toyshop where the book was sold previously in Providence, R.I. called "Billings' Music and Toys and Bookshop for Children." I could not find more information on that, unfortunately, and it is not currently in business.
-Pricing: I priced the book according to its importance, complete rarity, the fact it is a first edition, and the number of famous authors inside; in addition, the original illustrations contained within, so many of them, add to the price--it's just a fact there truly is no other book like this one, this massive and magical "Atlantic Treasury of Childhood Stories." It is too special to undersell, it is in great condition, and after much research I came around to the price listed. The other few listings I've been able to find do not have images at all, are not first editions, and except for one with a stock image on Amazon it is unavailable anywhere. This is why I did not take those listings to be serious listings, as I never do in those circumstances, because you don't know what you are getting. This factors into my pricing very much! There is no risk factor here, and with such an old book and first edition it is collectible beyond imagining and worth the money, trust me :)

FAQs

Absolutely! I'm willing to do anything to get this book to you, but I will not write on it. If it is not in the condition you want, I know preservation techniques and will certainly oblige as best I can. You just need to let me know.
I will wrap the book any way you want. It is special and so are you, you deserve it! I will also write cards, include photographs, anything you'd like that would make this transaction more, well, you.
I won't tell you how to care for your book, but as to how they are cared for now, they are housed in two places -- some are wrapped in plastic in my main room in the part of the house that used to be a quaint B&B, lined on lovely old wooden bookshelves; others are stacked in piles or leaning on cool, creative and different bookends all round the room, and all are given care, attention, and kept away from my dog :)

Others sit in my library, in built-in authentic 1800s wooden and glass-door library shelves that line the walls in a secluded room in a historic home on the shore. With vintage, warm lamplights over the tiny marble fireplace, the library's windows catch plenty of sunlight--the books are in good homes and will arrive undamaged.
If the book comes later than expected this does not mean it was sent late. Every book is sent within 1-3 business days, unless one of the days is a Sunday, then it could be an extra day. This applies to International orders as well, but they might take longer to get to you than in-country orders. If there is a problem, please bring it up with UPS or see Etsy's policies.
I am more than willing to hunt down a specific book for you. This can take time, however, and would be a matter of personal back-and-forth on the site so you would have to keep in contact. There is no guarantee. I'm good at finding things however, and if I cannot find it to sell to you myself I will direct you to where I can find it online, if I can.

Important to note, however, that I may have it in my holdings already so it ALWAYS helps to check in with me. Listings come up continually, and it may just be waiting here to get processed and put up.
Contact me directly via the site and I will do my absolute best to help correct it. There should be no problems.
Always willing to make new friends and take on new jobs or opportunities -- this business does not stop me from working a full or part time job, and I am currently looking, so please contact me! Dempseylynch@gmail.com. I am definitely interested in talking with you and love meeting new people (especially book lovers of course).
Sure! Although the books are priced the way they are and are worth that amount based on a lot of factors (condition compared to others available online, if there are any available online or if it is the only one, age and whether it is signed or special in some way, etc.) I am always willing to hear you out as to why you think the books price is off, and work with you as best I can. I cannot guarantee the price will change, that is bad for my business, but I will listen to you. Don't be afraid to reach out. The worst that can happen is I will say no.

I put the reasons behind my pricing method for each item at the end of the listing so check that out if you're curious too :)
