Description

US Navy Mk4 Mod 1 closing plug for use with the 6"/47 caliber cartridge case. The plug is made of bakelite, and is in mint condition, especially for being 70 years old! These plugs were inserted into the mouth of the cartridge case, and were used to keep the propellant inside the case. The cartridge casing was loaded into the gun and fired with the plug still installed. Upon firing, the plug disintegrated, and the empty casing was ejected out of the gun's chamber. For obvious reasons, very few of these closing plugs survived, especially in this condition. If you have a 6"/47 casing that is open on the end......you need this plug! Even if you don't have the shell casing to put this in, it's a cool little piece of history, and would make an excellent ashtray!

The 6"/47cal gun was used aboard 5 classes of light cruisers by the US Navy.........

The Brooklyn-class: USS Brooklyn USS Philadelphia USS Savannah USS Nashville USS Phoenix USS Boise and the USS Honolulu

The St. Louis-class: USS St. Louis and the USS Helena

The Cleveland-class: USS Cleveland USS Columbia USS Montpelier USS Denver USS Amsterdam USS Santa Fe USS Tallahassee USS Birmingham USS Mobile USS Vincennes USS Pasadena USS Springfield USS Topeka USS New Haven USS Huntington USS Dayton USS Wilmington USS Biloxi USS Houston USS Providence USS Manchester USS Buffalo USS Fargo USS Vicksburg USS Duluth USS Newark USS Miami USS Astoria USS Oklahoma City USS Little Rock USS Galveston USS Youngstown USS Buffalo USS Newark USS Amsterdam USS Portsmouth USS Wilkes-Barre USS Atlanta USS Dayton

The Fargo-class: USS Fargo USS Huntington USS Newark USS New Haven USS Buffalo USS Wilmington USS Vallejo USS Helena USS Roanoke USS Tallahassee USS Cheyenne USS Chattanooga

The Worcester-class: USS Worcester USS Roanoke USS Vallejo USS Gary
