Description

Vintage Lefton China Country Flower Girl Figurine Hand Painted Made in Japan KW2340A girl with flower baskets Figure Ceramic
Knick Knack

The Lefton mark can be found on a wide array of pottery, porcelain, and glass imported into the United States by the George Zoltan Lefton Company. The company was founded in 1941 by George Lefton. He had previously worked in the clothing and sportswear industry, but he was a collector of fine porcelain and dreamed of entering that business. America offered the backdrop for even a new immigrant into the country to have a chance at commercial success. George was one of the first American businessmen to enter post-war Japan, and he worked with a Japanese-American named Nunome who helps him to arrange the commercial contracts and becomes his business agent in Japan. Early Lefton china was imported into the U.S. with a "Made in Occupied Japan" mark, used in the years immediately following World War II commencing in about 1946. While not comparable to the best wares of European or Chinese porcelain manufacturers, Japanese porcelain was still of good quality and was produced at a cost that made it affordable for the average American family in the post-war years. Lefton made a wide variety of pieces, from kitchenware and utilitarian pieces to purely decorative pieces to be displayed on the living room shelf.

With that being said, a whimsical porcelain figurine was often the gift giving choice of most through the 60s. This adorable little girl would have been the perfect gift for mother’s day or a birthday!

She is hand painted and bears a red stamp reading “Lefton’s Reg. U.S. Pat. Off. Exclusive Japan”, as well as a tan stamp of “Lefton China Hand Painted Reg. U.S. Pat. Off. KW2340A”. The beautiful colors make the entire piece to life. The young lady measures about 6” tall, 3-1/8” base diameter and 4-1/2”” across the skirt.

Making this a rare find is that all the flower petals and leaves are still intact! The only item of note are two small flakes from the edge of the basket. Otherwise there are no crazing, cracks, blemishes, repairs or additional chips!

Whether for the new collector or the connoisseur, this beautiful piece will be a lovely addition to your Lefton China pieces or as an endearing gift to someone special!!

Insert from Kovels:

Lefton is a mark found on pottery, porcelain, glass, and other wares imported by the Geo. Zoltan Lefton Company. Lefton was also a well-known importer of lady head vases. The company began in 1941. George Lefton died in 1996 and the company was sold in 2002. The company mark has changed through the years, but because marks have been used for long periods of time, they are of little help in dating an object.
