Description

Custom order your own 1910 Shetland Wool socks. Each pair will be hand knitted one at a time on our 100 year old Legare Circular Sock machine. The wool is raised here on the farm on the backs of our more that 30 Shetland sheep. The wool is sheared, then driven to a wonderful small family run mill in the hills of Pennsylvania where it is washed and spun into beautiful sock yarn, blended with a bit of nylon for strength. The yarn is brought back to the farm where it is knitted on these rare machines to your specifications.

Choose your natural color and size. Women's small is shoe size 5-6, medium is 6-8, large is 9-10. For men: small is 7-8, medium 9-10, large 11-12, qnd extra large is 13-14. If a unique size is needed, please include a note with your order. For stripes, see the example in the picture. if you have a preference for which color is in the cuff, include a note with your order.

There is a choice of cuff. You can choose a Hemmed cuff (approx 1.5 inches) or a Ribbed cuff. (approx 3 inches) If you do not specify a cuff in your notes with your order, I will do a Hemmed cuff.

Shetland Wool developed naturally on the small islands off the coast of Scotland. The wool is highly suited for socks because it is a rare mix of the softest silky wool and a bit of guard hair for added strength not found in man developed breeds. The garments knitted with this divinely inspired wool softens with use and is very long lasting, resists pilling and comes in many natural colors.

During this post industrial period, it is a rare thing for the fiber and the manufacturing of the clothing article to happen all in one place. One of the goals of this farm is to produce sustainable clothing in the traditions when clothing was not the industrial throw away kind; when clothing was well made by hand with natural fibers, and cherished and mended instead of thrown away. With each pair of socks, I include extra yarn for darning purposes. Easy directions for darning can be found via YouTube.
