Historic Quilt Pattern PDF Block of the Month Sampler. 12 traditional blocks named

DIXIE DIARY BOM Civil War Quilts Sampler. 12 paper Patterns by Mail
Original design by Barbara Brackman, quilt historian & fabric designer.

The 12 blocks and accurate history that goes with them comes from the diary of 20-year-old Southerner Sarah Morgan. When the Civil War began in 1861 she lived in Louisiana's capitol Baton Rouge. One of eight children from a wealthy family, she emjoyed a luxury that would soon be a hazy memory.

Her account of her family's Civil War experiences was published in 1913 as A Confederate Girl's Diary. The patterns follow Sarah's years as a refugee, a girl growing up in extraordinary circumstances. Each of the twelve blocks is named for a quote from Sarah.

The mailed-to-you pattern package contains 15 b& w pages, patterns for the 12" blocks with rotary cutting & simple applique templates, plus an intro with yardage and setting suggestions. The 15 pages include quotes from Sarah's Dixie Diary and there are links on each page to the Civil War Quilts blog post with more of the story and more ideas for settings, etc.

I’d rate the blocks as perfect for beginners, even 8 year olds. The applique is optional but the star and especially the heart are quite basic.

Series appeared in 2013 as a BOM sampler on my CivilWarQuilts blog. I'll keep the history stories up on the blog. Each pattern sheet gives you a link to that extended history of Sarah's trials and tribulations. The blog also shows you many quilts completed by readers who sewed along in 2013.
