Description

** See SPECIAL SHIPPING NOTE below **

If you prefer your vintage tools to wear their signs of age and use like badges, then this cool contraption is for you: A c1960s Neuman Chimney Cleaner that’s designed to expand inside square chimneys to effectively scrape soot deposits from its walls with the simple pulls of two ropes. Added bonus is that it collapses for easy storage.

The sturdy metal mechanical chimney sweep with chippy bright orange paint measures about 23” tall and 5” square when collapsed, expanding to about 30” tall and 15” square. This long-working tool is barn fresh, meaning it comes with dust, cobwebs and, of course, soot and other grime! While some of the tool’s metal cleaning rods are bent slightly out of shape, they can easily be repositioned by hand.

The attached section of yellow rope would need to be replaced in order to actually use the tool. Even when new, the Neuman Chimney Cleaner did not come with the two sections of rope needed, according to an original box found elsewhere online. The box advertised that the tool was “simple … effective … inexpensive” and “outlasts bristle brushes many times.”

Online research shows that inventor Orin Neuman of Wittenberg, Wis., was issued a U.S. patent for his Neuman Chimney Cleaner in September 1930. One of it touted benefits is that it “can be remotely collapsed by pulling on a control line other than the line supporting the weight of the cleaner.”

Here’s the product summary from said patent: “The invention includes a center support member fastened to a horizontal plate, which plate is concentric with and larger than an upper plate. The center support member passes through the upper plate and is connected to a support line held by the operator of the chimney cleaner. Metal cleaning rods are attached to the upper plate, and pass through the lower plate. The ends of these rods are shaped so as to be horizontally parallel to the inside walls of the chimney, for even and effective removal of soot. A second line runs from the top of the center support member, down through an eyelet attached to the upper plate, and again up to the operator. Thus when the cleaner becomes lodged in the chimney, the operator simply pulls up on the second rope, forcing the lower plate down with respect to the upper plate, allowing the cleaning members to contract, dislodging the cleaner.”

I’ve had fun playing (expanding and collapsing) with this tool, which I originally bought thinking it’d be cool rustic or industrial yard art — but my hubby wasn’t a fan of the idea! Bottom line is that it does appear to function as intended, but would also make for a fun and conversational display piece!
