Embossed brown cloth with gilt titles to spine, heavy wear with cloth split and fraying along joints and wearing through at extremities, tanning and foxing throughout, previous owner (Isaac P. Cassel) name and date written in front end paper along with a stamp bearing the previous owner's name, "Rosenburgh" written in pencil under "Q" on the title page, previous owner's notes and corrections on at least three pages of the text, binding sound.

The book offers short biographical sketches of artists, writers, poets, composers and other celebrities of the day. What makes the book all the more interesting are the few contributions by the original owner. For example, he corrects the name of Bartholdy Mendelssohn: "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy is the correct name." On page 26 he has underlined "Hotel de Baviere," and noted, "This hotel is not in dresden but in Lupsic."
