Description

Early Canadian Landscape painting near Lake Megantic, Quebec. It's the study of a waterfall on the lake more than 150 years into what is now a vanished world.

Lake Mégantic is a body of water in Québec, located in the Appalachian Mountains near the U.S. border. It is a source of the Chaudière River which drains into the St Lawrence River at Québec City. The name Mégantic means 'where the fish gather' in the Abénaquis language.

This work is a fine example of how landscapes were painted many years ago. There's a precision and a real effort to accurately portray the countryside.

In style this work has similarities with the Hudson River School of painting and the panoramic view of a countryside. This painting is different than theirs in that the waterfall appears as the focal point as a study of the elements that's presented along with its surroundings.

With no room for any personal statement or interpretation of subject matter before them and just the artist's effort to accurately portray the waterfall a most distinctive image was created. It's lovely.

The Abénaquis belonged to the large Algonquian linguistic and cultural family, the Abenakis of Quebec, who came from the current states of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. In 1700, they settled permanently in Odanak and Wôlinak, on the south shore of the St. Lawrence, near Trois-Rivières.

The painting itself is in good condition along with a few spots formed about the sky. The antique frame is in good vintage condition with some gold painted touch ups, ready to hang.

The name of the Lake and the painter came from a companion piece, similar in style, that was badly damaged.
