Like many of my works, the shape and design of this wooden platter was inspired by Native American Pottery vessels. This large platter is approximately 15 inches wide and 2 & 1/2 inches tall. I copied the design of the Thunderbird from a native American Pottery vessel.

The wood for this bowl was salvaged from a wood yard where it was destined to become firewood. The bowl was turned "wet" to a rough over sized shape, then allowed to dry before final turning on the lathe. The two step process is necessary because as wood dries out the rough shape usually distorts into an out-of-round condition. When the piece is put back on the lathe I'm able to turn the bowl back into round and finish the piece. After final truing I then Carved the design into teh platter ans filed it with the inlay compound. Returning the platter to the lathe I then finished turning the platter,

Wax Finish
