Description

This is a rare Hartmann Natural Tan Belting Leather Lawyers Executive Gladstone Style Briefcase Attache. Hartmann literature describing this case states that it is made out of the highest quality belting leather. In it's product description and directions for care of this case, Hartmann noted that this impressive belting leather acquires a lustrous patina with age. The patina of the belting leather on this used case is clear and convincing evidence that this Hartmann claim was true.

This case was manufactured sometime before 1996. This fact makes this briefcase one of the most sought after Hartmann cases because many collectors are of the opinion that Hartmann cases manufactured before 1997 are made of the highest grade Belting Leather

This case is designed for a busy litigator or a busy executive. The case provides ample storage for all of the electronic devices, writing gear, files and books a litigator needs. It has a leather handle, solid brass handle anchors, and a glossy brass clasp. The interior has two leather pouches. There are also 2 leather pen pouches. The interior has 3 gussets ( compartments) to facilitate organization and storage. The exterior dimensions are 18.5 inches wide, 13 inches high, and 6 inches wide. The hardware includes a brass combination lock closure set to 000 waiting for its new owner to program it for the future. There are also brass feet to assist in keeping the bottom of the case off of damaging surfaces.

Dimensions:

Length: 18.5 inches
Height: 13 inches
Width: 6 inches

Condition:

This bag is in very good condition. It has no rips, tears or holes. It is structurally sound. All hardware works as intended. However, it does have some flaws. One flaw is a surface crack in the flap over closure strap. See collage photo 5. As you can see from the reverse side of the flap over in the collage, this crack has not gone through to the other side and the flap over remains in tact. The most obvious distress on this bag comes from the water spots on the back side of the briefcase. I have been advised by some of my mentors that a water spot can be eliminated by dying the bag. However, I have resisted dying this bag for the same reason I have resisted dying my hair. I believe all things vintage are unique because of their life experiences and marks like these faint water spots give vintage bags their character. These spots appear to have been scattered across portions of the surface like rain drops giving it its own individual character. If you disagree with me buy this bag and dye it. But if you don't disagree, buy it and carry it with pride.

If you want a pristine Hartmann bag without such distress we and other shops have one at a much higher price. Hartmann has been manufacturing leather goods since 1877. We have magazine ads from the 1960s through 1992 promoting Hartmann bags manufactured with the similar material, trim style and design. Based on the materials used in the construction of this bag and the style, it is my opinion this bag was manufactured sometime in the 1960s to early to mid 1980s.

About Hartmann

This item was shipped off extremely quickly and arrived fairly quickly, even though it had to go through customs. The bag itself was described correctly in terms of condition, the only critique I might have is that perhaps a better resolution image might be more helpful, I wondered if the photo quality was just an etsy issue but I think it might be camera related. That being said, I struggled to find this particular bag anywhere else and I'm very happy to have it. Thanks very much!

GUARANTEED AUTHENTIC OR ALL MONEY BACK. We understand there are counterfeits and knockoffs of vintage products by well known manufacturers for sale all over the internet and in other market places. We use multiple procedures to assure the products we sell are authentic. One procedure we use is to research authenticity through vintage manufacturer catalogs and to report our research in the listing. Sometimes we include a snippet from the catalog to corroborate our research and educate you about the history of the bag. The purpose of reporting what the manufacturer says about its product in the catalog is to verify our research on the authenticity and to educate you about how a vintage product was portrayed in the past. It is not intended to hold our shop out as a representative of the manufacturer. However, if it turns out we are wrong or our research is not correct we guarantee that if we sell you a product represented to be manufactured by a reputable company like Coach, Cole Haan, Ghurka, Filson, Christian Dior, Hartmann, Gucci, or any other company and you have competent evidence that the product is not authentic we will refund your purchase price and delivery cost. In addition, we will pay for return postage.
