Featured in the Summer 2010 edition of The Glass Bead; a quarterly publication of the International Society of Glass Beakmakers.

This interesting little sculpture was created by myself in my home studio. The glass mushroom was formed over my torch and incorporates my own handblown shards.
I aggressively manipulated the shards into the exquisite designs you see throughout the mushroom.

I then went looking for the perfect base to mount my mushroom on. Living in rural Alberta, the bush around my home offers an abundance of choices. I found the perfect little burl on a fallen spruce tree. I left the moss that was growing on it and did an acrylic pour over all of it. Then I permanently mounted the lampwork mushroom to the burl, topping it off with a lovely swarovski crystal.

What's a burl you ask?
A burl is a tree growth in which the grain has grown in a deformed manner. It is commonly found in the form of a rounded outgrowth on a tree trunk or branch that is filled with small knots from dormant buds.

This piece measures approx. 5 1/2 X 3 1/2 inches.
