Description

A Vintage Pair of Borghese Mid-century Sailing Ships Plaster Bookends

What a sweet nautical accent for a home library or office. Use on each end of a row of books on a desk or one on each shelf of your book shelf. Each captures an early sailing ship designed by John Ericsson.

About the Ericsson ships:
John Ericsson was born in Sweden and settled in New York where he built 8 experimental engines between 1840 to 1850. One of the ships in this pair is an early design from 1851 when Ericsson persuaded his financial backers to build the Caloric Ship Ericsson, a 260 foot paddle ship powered by a four cylinder caloric engine. The ship design was not an initial success, and unfortunately for Ericsson it sank in storm off New York. On being raised the Ericsson was then fitted with steam engines which were later removed and the ship continued in service as a sailing vessel until 1898 when it was driven ashore in a storm off the west coast of Canada.

About the Borghese made bookends:
Borghese products were manufactured in the USA by Niepolds Inc. of Gaithersburg, Maryland just outside of Washington, DC, starting shortly after the beginning of the 20th century and continuing up till the early 1970's. Borghese figurines, boxes, lamp bases, and bookends are all molded in a hard, high quality plaster and then painted or gilded. The surfaces were then deliberately distressed to mimic years of wear and patina.

These lovely bookends are in very good vintage condition with their original felt bottoms with labels on each piece. The backs and underplates are in aqua paint with the underplates having chipping from years of use. They measure 5" wide by 5.5" tall. The underplate extends 4.25" from the front of the bookend and 3" from the back side. Be sure to zoom in on the photographs to get the best view.

Fantastic for Father's Day, Graduation and Birthday gifting.
