This carved wooden wall sculpture is a from a current theme that I have been working on.This sculpture is a part of a series that was in a solo exhibition at Viewarts.org. There is a picture of this show published in July/Aug 2012 Adirondack Life Magazine. (see pics)

The Nike Of The Forest theme is an expression of nature's resilience to the pressures of human activity. I am appropriating the symbolism and gesture of the Greek sculpture "Nike Of Samothrace", and applying it to the concept of one being in the role of caretaker, or steward of the wood lot. I am ejoying creating these sculpture as a series of allegories.

The center piece of this sculpture is a remnant of an old stump of American Chestnut tree that was cut down in the 1930's in an attempt to save heathy trees from the impending blight. This blight quickly destroyed a once dominant forest species.

The wings are carved Hemlock, pigmented black, then finished. The wings are lap jointed to the Chestnut, and blended.

The size of this sculpture is 36"W x 12" D x 25" H

The sculpture has a metal bracket on back for wall mounting.
