Description

Ireland
Michael MacLiommoir
Photography by Edwin Smith
Notes on the plates by Olive Smith
113 photogravure plates
10 colour plates
5 maps
First edition
Michael MacLiommoir with Hilton Edwards co-founded the Gate Theatre just off O'Connell Street in Dublin in 1928 to provide for a broad range of plays.
During their first season, they presented seven plays, including works by Ibsen, Wilde and O'Neill.
Their productions were experimental, innovative and different to the fare offered up by the more established Abbey Theatre. It was at the Gate that Orson Welles, James Mason and Michael Gambon began their acting careers. Lord and Lady Longford provided financial support in the 1930's (Lord Longford's translation of Moliere is amongst my listings).
Olive Cook was a writer with an interest in architecture and heritage who married Edwin Smith.
Edwin Smith was an English photographer best known for vignettes of English gardens, landscapes and architecture.
Hardback with dust jacket from 1966.
First edition
Photographs of prominent Irish sites of interest taken in 1966, capturing a view of Ireland past. Some colour photos including a stunning photo of a page from The Book of Kells and a colour photo of Dublin's Ha'penny Bridge and quays. Of Irish interest and of interest to photographers and historians. In very good condition. For anybody interested in Irish history, heritage, architecture and scenery, this book is a must.
